finally removed all the old crumbling original boot striping. slow go with the eraser wheel , but did the trick. however I plan on ending the new stripe at the upturn of the spray rail and the previous setup was following all the way to the prow. Ive hit it with acetone , special cleaner, scrub pad / soft scrub , and finally heavy cut compound. I still show a very slight ghosting of the lower blue stripe. It may not be visible from farther when in the water, but it is to me now and my anal-ness is not letting it go. any ideas?

Your anal-ness is going to be a lot easier to treat than those ghosts. The underlying material has been protected from the elements for over 20 years. No amount of treatment to the area is going to change that as the "ghost" is really on the surrounding area, not the area that was covered.

Why not just carry the stripe all the way?

Wet sanding will restore the area if you are patient and start with around 320 grit and work your way the around 1000 grit then compound and polish. Takes work but it can be done. If you want restore the OEM stripe go to hullstripes.com

its more of the blue color ghosting... I know what you mean about the surrounding areas.

yes I got the new stripes from there. I went with just two color . the only concern is on the upswing , the new stripes should cover the rest

I removed the blue stripe above the rubrail on mine last year and have pretty bad ghosting. The only thing do far that has worked was starting with about 220 grit wet sanding with a palm sander (would take 6 months by hand...lol). Then from 220 I went to about 500 or so then to 1000. Still needed to go to about 2000 after that but had already spent about 5 hours on it and only got about 3'. With probably another 35' or so to go (about 20' of striping on each side) I gave up. I was hoping after a few months in the sun it would even out a little but no luck there either. My next plan is to mask it off and paint it back on? Only reason I removed it was because it was cracked bad and when I tried to buff around it there were blue streaks coming off it all over the gelcoat.

well , got at it today.. perfect day for messing with boats. I got a little creative with the taper towards the bow as I couldn't do the original plan due to the bottom paint line being so high. that being said , it looks a million times better than the peeling mess that was on there. so happy to check this one off the list. lot of eyeball work. I kept everything wet with the solution form hullstripes.com. the sunnyside was a bit tricky... had to act fast
