Found a 2010 250 Select EX with 139 hrs for $56,900 in Chicago. Book price through NADA is $43,825. Is there any place else to get more accurate values? Seems like asking prices are always a lot more than book. Is this a fare price for this boat? Looks to be in excellent shape and has not been in salt water. Trailer is included. Thanks

I've found book prices for boats to be a nice suggestion, at best. The thing is there aren't nearly as many boats as, say, cars, so the value of a boat almost always comes down to what number the owner agrees to sell.

A better way to know if you're within a reasonable range is to scan the market for similar boats.

Keep in mind most owners ask for the price they'd *like* to get realizing that probably won't happen.

That blue book price seems low to me. I bought a 2007 250 Select EX 496 last fall and paid $45,000. I searched nation wide for months and thought I got a fair price. I don't imagine that the prices have changed much in the last 6 months or so. I would guess that somewhere in the low to mid 50's would be about right on, price wise.

Somefun, found a 2008 250 SLX, 6.2L, 217hrs, looks like new for $54,500. NADA is $35,220. Would like to find a guide for prices closer than NADA. Also some confusion on models on Sea Ray site. Sea Ray says SLX's didn't come out till 2012. The ones I've looked at pre 2012 have SLX embroidered on rear seats. Also NADA does not have 6.2L as option only 5.7. Very confusing.

I'm not sure when the 6.2 became available, but I have seen it referenced a lot here on the forums and online. Could it possibly be a replacement engine?

Sea Ray officially called them Select Ex in the earlier years, eventually switching to SLX (stands for "Select EX). They are all commonly referred to "SLX". My 07 has all of the SLX logos as well.

I was facing the same situation as you, trying to find some sort of guide for the value of these boats and the best I could do is search boat trader and other online sales sites and get a feel for what they're going for. My gut feeling is that the fair value of the boat you mention above is probably somewhere right in the middle between their asking price and the NADA value. I do know that if you're looking specifically for a 250 SLX, you're probably going to have to travel to get a good deal on what you want. I drove from Seattle to Houston to get mine. They were few and far between here. And a little more expensive, it seemed.

I paid $45,000 around 6 months ago. It had the big block and around 200+ hours and was in very nice (almost mint) condition. It included a nice trailer.

Good luck! I'd be glad to help out more and send you pics etc if they would be helpful to you.

The price of new boats seems to have skyrocketed over the last several years. This is pricing a lot of us out of the market for a new boat and is creating a strong demand for good condition used boats. Especially the higher end boats. This is pushing the price of used boats higher and higher. Heck, if I wanted to sell my 270SLX, I could get nearly the price I paid for it 5 years ago. It's insane!!

Also, it seems NADA uses a formula to calculate the depreciation on a boat with little regard to the actual market. I think that may be some of the reason for the discrepancy between their price and the real world price.

The book seems to be for high hour salt water boats. There is nowhere in the calculations to enter hours or even condition.
In Colorado, you take the book price and double it for a nice boat. That asking price for a 2010 seems very competitive.

Book prices do include salt water and fresh water boats as a whole... Of course condition and cleanliness isn't apart of the book per say.

I was just looking at the spec sheet for my 07 and see that the 6.2L was an option.

Somefun, the 2008 250 SLX is in NW Iowa. The guy is selling it for a friend. He's come down from $54,600 to $51,000. Boat has always been in Minnesota/Iowa, no salt water and only one owner. Boat has 217 hrs on it and appears to be immaculate, comes with trailer. Stopped in to a Sea Ray dealership in Helena MT to get a value from a dealers NADA book. Happened that their was a retired boat rep for Crestliner helping out that day. Both my internet NADA book and his said boat sold for $68,112 new. His book had three values, used trade in, average retail, and high retail. My internet book only had low retail, and average retail, not sure why. High retail in his was $43,300. Then he stated you have to take geographical location into consideration. Minnesota, land of a thousand lakes has a gazillion boats so values should be less. He stated most expensive area, Utah and Colorado, not many lakes not many boats. Your area Washington and Oregon have a lot of boat dealers so there is a lot completion. He said be very careful to check out options between same model boats. Dealers will order in units with very few options just to beat the competitions price, hoping buyers won't compare apples to apples and just go with the cheaper one. He was a very nice gentleman that was a wealth of information. Your 07 with 200 plus hrs for $45000 appears to be a good deal. Was it ever in salt water. This salesman stated probably 10% less for salt water unless rinsed and flushed each time. I also am 1300 miles away from boat so getting some transport prices, not cheap, $2.50 to 2.80 per loaded mile. Should go look at it before I by sight unseen but don't have time. He has sent all the pictures I have requested so I think he is honest and has represented the boat correctly. Let me know what you think.

Rod,

It sounds like the retired rep gave you a lot of good info! I would definitely have the boat surveyed (inspected). I flew to Houston to see the boat in person and drive it after I had come up with a tentative price and had seen a lot of high res photos of it. After seeing it, I hired a local marine surveyor to go over the boat. After receiving their "clean bill of health" on the boat, I arranged wire transfer/title transfer through the credit union that was holding the lien. Then I drove down to pick it up.

It sounds like you have a good boat lined up. I would still have to see it in person and have the survey done if it was me. It's just a LOT of money to risk otherwise. Good luck and keep me posted!

Oh! My boat had never been in salt water until I put in in some last week! :)

Hi Curt, the guy has come down to $48,000. Am trying to find time to get there to look at it. What did it cost you to have a mechanic look at it? On your 07 can you use the area under the back sun deck cushions as coolers or are they just storage for rest of the cushions. Also how does the head system work. There is a 10 gal holding tank with pump out as standard equipment or are tank and pump a option? Rod

That seems high for a 250 SLX. I have a 270 SLX with less than 200 hours that I would probably sell for around that much. I'm looking to move up to a cabin cruiser.

Hi LawyerMan, what year is your 270 SLX? What condition is yours. The one I'm dealing on is like new and has not been in salt water. Has yours been in salt water? From what I have found out in the last couple weeks is boats that have been in salt water are worth 10% to 15% less.

Sorry it took me a while to see this question. I paid around $250-300 to have a marine surveyor check it out. The area under the back cushions is very shallow and one side will be filled with the center cushion when it folds up. My head is just a standard "porta potti" with a through-hull cleanout attached to it. Pretty much a hose that leads to a fitting on the hull. I haven't emptied it yet, but it sounds like most people just remove it and dump it into their toilet as necessary. 48k seems like a good deal to me. Which motor does this one have again?

Curt

If you are going to use the head, I would suggest one with a vacuflush toilet. The kids use it on my boat all the time.
