Boating in Red Water

Oh boy is the lake ugly today..............I am not sure if it looks like red wine, tomato soup. or runny ketchup......... but it sure is bad. :smt021

It will take a couple of weeks to clear up based on what I have seen in the past. And no..........we didn't venture out today either.

Dave,
Will that red "slop" do any damage to the raw water side of the engines. Grit or sand in the water can raise hell with the impellers!

Barnegat Bay (where we used to boat) is notoriously shallow and when anchoring, often times the bottom will get really churned up. Sucking all that sand into the strainers and through the water pump cannot be good for the systems. The Chesapeake has a bit more water so that is one problem I can avoid. The number of crab pots will more than make up for the shallow water though!! Always a challenge! :smt043

Frank...........It certainly can't be good for impellers since all that finely suspended silt will greatly increase wear. Thats another reason I don't like to go out when the water gets nasty like it is now.

It has nothing to do with boats, but I remember talking to a lawn irrigation person who told me they have a lot more head and pump failures on water taken from the lake for lawn irrigation as compared to someone using city or well water.

Can someone take a picture of this red water? Sounds cool (in a morbid sort of way).

Yep, Frayed Knot stayed on her trailer today too. I also have a feeling it can't be good for the internals of the engine so I flushed like it came out of the salt water.

We boat on the muddy Mississippi. The impellers probably get a little more wear and it is good to pull the drain plugs and flush the engine occassionally.

Went to the Marina yesterday and the water actually looked worse than over the weekend (if that's possible). Right now it looks like Chocolate Milk with a little red dye added. It's about as ugly as I have ever seen it.

Sorry I didn't have my camera with me. :smt021

Dave,

Any updates on the water, I did not want to hijack Todd's post? We are planning on trying to get out this weekend if the weather is decent. Just thought I would check to see if you had been down there and could give an update on the water color

Wesley...........It's clearing up now in the main channel. We were out yesterday and it wasn't bad at all. By the weekend it ought to be even better.
