Boat will not go forward (just reverse)

I have a 1988 sear ray Seville with a 4.3 Mercruiser inboard/outboard. When my prop is trimmed down it will not go into forward, just reverse.When the prop is trimmed up it will go into forward and reverse. What could be the likely cause?

Stretched lower shift cable........... Replace your lower shift cable.

if the prop idea doesn't work.. you can at least load it up on the trailer by pulling the truck in forward instead of backing it in!!:smt038
