In the mail, Unlimited towing was $121. $10 membership, $121 Unlimited towing, $6 donation for a total of $137 to renew. I did it online and the Unlimited towing was $55 instead. Go figure. Check your stuff out. Mike

Hmmm...mine auto-renews. I wonder what I'll get gigged for this year. Thanks for the reminder to check!

I renew mine at the boat show each year, seem to have a better deal if you renew there at the booth.

I never gave this towing much thought because it is included in my NBOA insurance (unlimited towing). Do you guys not have that or are you buying supplemental?. I am going to give these towing guys a call in the spring to get their understanding of how this would work...just in case.

If you insure with Geico you get it with your policy for the reduced rate is how I understand it.

And don't forget about any discounts that may apply through other organizations that you belong to. I always have to call boat U.S. to renew because I have to "remind" them of the discount that I get from belonging to the AGLCA,

Are you sure it was the same product? Like Sea Tow, Boat US offers both salt water and fresh water towing services, with different rates for each. Fresh water (or Sea Tow's Lakes Card) is less expensive.

As sure as I can be. The mail option was the same for basic and Unlimited gold, but the Unlimited was half price. No options for salt vs fresh that I see. I've been a member for 12 years.

There is a difference for salt. Had to upgrade when we looped and then again when we came south last winter.

I've had Sea Tow forever. My current policy covers towing but it's a reimbursement-based system. And towing can be expensive very fast. If you're not a member you pay an hourly rate that starts when they leave the dock, and you have to pay on the spot. They do other services too like jump starts, disentanglements, fuel delivery, etc.

With Sea Tow, members get priority for calls over non-members. This can be a real help on a busy day. In the summer I've heard several boats waiting for help.

I've had to use use Sea Tow twice. First was several years ago for a dead battery at anchor. And second was last year when I burned up a raw water pump impeller. They towed me a several miles to a dock. Both times all I had to do with give them my Sea Tow member number, and no insurance complications. It's worth it to me.

In the Geico policy they carry boat us it’s only a $10 membership fee for unlimited towing from Boat US ,after speaking with with geico last year they made me cancel my policy with Boat US got a full refund and then they sent me the paperwork from Geico showing that I have the same coverage from boat US that I just gave up for the total cost of an additional $10 membership fee

I do Sea Tow Gold and it does all my boats ( Three ), WaveRunners ( 2 ), Dinghy and trailers ( 2 ). Also if I am on another boat and it get stuck Sea Tow will tow the boat in. ( I have to say I was driving )
With my insurance company I have to layout out the money for the tow up front and wait to get it back, not with Sea Tow.

Do you guys that have it on an insurance policy also get access to the app? The Boat US app alone is probably worth the price I pay. You can call for help with the touch of a button (sending GPS coords passively), set favorite buoys for wave/temp data, etc. It's pretty slick...

I have to check that out. I got Boat US through my West Marine points.

I can tell you this: Sea Tow's services are great. Their app is sh$t.

I keep the Boat US membership for the App as stated above, and discounts off fuel. The 10 cents or so per gallon pays for my membership quickly. Yes, my insurance has towing, up to $1500. Maybe with unlimited towing thru BoatUS, I will get towed all over Lake Michigan instead of burning my own fuel.:p

Here is the kicker with these programs. Since they are franchises, what what you sign. I have two friends who have BoatUS get Todd and the franchise is trying to call them salvage and is winning in court for 10's of thousands. These boats where fine other than bent running gear.

I have same with NBOA. The only difference I am aware of is with Boat US you pay nothing for the tow. With what we have with NBOA, you pay upfront and are reimbursed. Never used it myself....

I think the definition of "salvage" has nothing to do with whether or not you're dealing with a franchise. The difference between towing and salvage is pretty well defined. As with most things...don't sign (a salvage contract) on the dotted line if you don't know what you're agreeing to :)

I think the damage to the boat has very little to do with the claim of salvage. I believe it's more to do with whether it's a hard or soft grounding and the risk it presents.
