Boat hits bridge – video

At least the Magma made it through unscathed.
Gary, if his antennae were raked back, they'd just flick down and back into position without damage.

Ok, here is my dumb question....why did the guy turn and go back under the bridge again? Heck, he was already heading downstream, the damage is done, why not simply keep on your original heading? I'm assuming the panic move caused him to react that way. The guy was pretty lucky the current didn't slam him into one of the bridge pilings while was doing a u-turn under the bridge.

I was thinking the same thing.

I know I've been in similar situations where the current is ripping one way, and you're headed the same direction and the pucker factor kicks in. You always need to approach slow and leave yourself an out or anticipate if something like that could happen.

I wonder if approaching from maybe the stern direction would have been better since the current was so strong AND the exact overall height wasn't known. This way since the current was so strong, one could have easily powered up in forward and pulled away.

Either way, at least their wasn't too much damage.

Talk abt pucker factor and bridge misadventures - I went under a local bridge just as someone passed me to stbd at FULL SQUAT speed (smaller boat that could make it under the lower span to stbd) just as a huge SR (550DA?) was entering the span from the other direction. Talk about struggling to maintain control - just as the wake hit me from the squatter I was maybe 30' from passing the big SR. I increased throttle enough to TRY and maintain control. Only thing that saved me from disaster was seeing the whole situation materialize in front of me just as I thought it would. No harm done.

I think your all thinking too hard... My guess is the husband got the boat in the divorce settlement and the wife is taking it out for one last cruise

Before it goes on Ebay for $15,000

Well... there ya go. "My antennas are raked back so I don't have to know how to go under a bridge"

Guy was probably too stupid or drunk to use the radio anyway.

Now boys and girls what did we learn......ouch and (B)reak (O)ut (A)nother (T)housand.

School of hard knocks is a good teacher.

The sound alone is enough for me. Just plain stupid. If you think its gonna be that close why chance it? ESPECIALLY in a current that is pushing you TOWARDS the bridge.

Oh come on! There are people on this board that talk about how they "gun it" when going under a bridge so the boat will squat down otherwise they would hit the bridge.

There was a Sea Ray here at Bluewater last year (320 or something) that hit a bridge at something like 8 knots... literally cracked the boat in half... not only the upper deck but down into the hull sides. Guess he didn't "gun it" enough.

I'd agree Tonka. When I was 2 months into the first season with this boat I had planned a trip that would take me through a number of drawbridges, three fixed bridges and a set of locks. I had everything planned out and new that I needed all drawbridges open and that I had sufficient clearence even at high tide under the fixed bridges, so long as I lowered the antennae for the last fixed bridge before the locks. Two hours into the trip with one fixed bridge and the locks left I got so excited to see the locks open that....you got it... as I approached the last fixed bridge I forgot to lower the antennae. Before i could do anything about it I heard the antennae bend backwards and the WHIP forward. I lost the top 4-6 inches and a ton of self respect, for a little while. Planning was great....execution not so much. Oh and Sea Ray did not replace it under warranty...
After watching it 10 times I am going with inexperience. 90% of all boaters admit to doing something really dumb with their boats...the other 10% are liars.

He can't blame it on the current. The white water you see as he becomes paralell to the span is his prop-wash: he had throttled up. The same water is calm once he emerged from the other side. I hope he took up camping after that little stunt.

Maybe he was tired of his AFA (aft facing arch).

This one ie even better - the engines even worked afterwards!

These are all painful to watch!

What happened here? Did it break away from its mooring?

As I was driving through our Marina this morning I happened to notice a 320 on blocks in the lot. Not a regular at our Marina, York PA as the hail port. It was still dark but something looked funny about the radar arch. On a closer look I saw the Raymarine Radar Dome has basically smashed in half. I thought to myself someone came in under the railroad bridge without knowing the clearance. Now that is an expensive mistake.

It looks like a high water/fast current situation. He cut his barges loose and they went under ahead of him. I wonder if the bridge did not go up as fast as he thought it would, but it looks like it didn't go up at all...

Aviation and boating have so much in common. The 5 "P's" come into play in both arenas - especially in these accidents:

Umh I heard it as 6 P's

"Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance"

It depends on how you spell "pisspoor". When I was CO of my Navy squadron, I used to have fun when my Lieutenants would ask about their annual Fitness Reports - I would hold it up as if I was reviewing it and say to them "is piss-poor hyphenated and does sh!tty have two t's"? Got a couple of them to bug their eyes out until they spread the word that it was the Skipper's standard Fitrep joke...
