Boat Flooded, serious issue...

Ok, I will call Marina and ask if they can order. Hopefully they take the smaller one back...
, I feel bad for you being a Canadian living in Georgian bay . The Marina mechanics are crazy expensive here however there are few mobile marine mechanics around. Most advertise on kijiji. I don't have a recommendation as I do.all my own wrenching. . What lake are you on or twn are you nearest to. I have family that gave a business moving boats and providing handling lessons with 2 certified captains I could ask for recommendations from should you find yourself in need of a marine mech in the future. Looks as though you have it well in hand now as far as this one goes . Ps central marine in Midland is about the best around here for parts as they supply all the local marinas. Pss dry land storage will be your best bet this coming winter as lake levels are going to remain high for the foreseeable future.

Thanks for the info. I’m on the west side of Lake Muskoka. I’ll do some searching for mobile marine mechanics. I think I’ll be dealing with Pride Marine from now on. They seem like a reputable chain.

My mom lives on the muskoks river in Bracebridge . I'm keeping away from boating today and until 6 pm tomorrow when all the rowdies have gone away .. I was out yesterday for a couple of hours in the morning and only because I had some company up from Niagara. Penetanguishene bay was crazy with citiot boaters who think boating is all about who can go the fastest to the end of our little bay and over to the nearby anchorages to drink their faces off before coming back to the marinas and crashing into the docks and other boats tomorrow mid morning before jamming themselves onto the 400 south and leaving us in peace to enjoy the fireworks. I have a bring along caregiver for my youngest son 2 years old and my five year old all set for the exodus and the best seats for viewing the fireworks tomorrow night. If you want to check it out tomorrow night I would reccomend coming into penetang tomorrow it is supposed to be a great show this year for our country's birthday

There are definitely some people who don't respect the laws, or know how to drive.

Hope you had a good weekend. Weather was fantastic.

It was great even though my 2 year olds caregiver did not come along we cast off at 630 and went to the town dock for music and icecream before anchoring in the bay for the show . Spent the night on the hook and cruised back to our dock with children still sleeping at 0530. Got my babies home in time for a babysitter to arrive and today I'm stuck in family court . Happy we had a nice night to enjoy before the day in store for me now

Regardless of how much flooding. Contact Insurance. Remove engine sparkplugs, hand crank engine with plugs removed to remove as much water as you can. drain engine oil and replace with new. Pull ignition coil wire. Use stater to crank engine a few times to get oil thru system. At least 30 seconds at each cranking with starter. To ensure all cylinders run through cycle. Then put sparkplugs back in, connect ignition wires. Crank and let run when started for about 10 minutes or up to operating temp. Then let oil run back into pan, drain again and refill. Start it up and run for a bit. Let it drain back into pan and check for water by looking at oil to see if any froth. That will let you know if any water is still in it. You may still have issues if she was being crushed against the roof. Hull cracking , etc. Not visible until too late. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input. Marina said they did this and ran the boat for a while. No water in oil. Will consider dry land storage this year.

So the issue with the starter the marina ordered for me is that the serial number they used started with a '1'. It was a starter for a 2010 engine... My engine should start with a '0' even though it doesn't show it on the actual engine. Mercury's internal parts catalog automatically starts with a '0' after speaking with them.

Going to speak with Marina and try to reason with them to exchange it for the correct one which is actually cheaper...

if you want to do it for a budget take your starter to an electric shop to take it apart , clean it , check the bearings , check or replace the brushes and put it in .

why a new starter ?

two people asked about insurance but you did not comment so i guess you do not have insurance right ?

if yes - man , call the insurance !

I'm taking the original starter to a repair shop tomorrow morning and will see what they say. The starter has been rebuilt before (2013 I think), but i just wanted to get a new one since it's so old.

There was no insurance on it as last year we didn't put it in the water. Of course we had record breaking floods the one year it doesn't have insurance... Lesson learned!

no problem , so we speak about cost effective solutions since no insurance .

your starter does not have mechanical damage on the wirings etc from submerge . so a good clean might do it .

there is another solution which worked a million times but cannot be fully recommended officially : look for an ( used ) chevy small v8 block car starter. its not spark protected , you decide.

So here's the situation... I'm picking up the original starter from the place that's rebuilding it tomorrow and will install it this weekend. I want to make sure the boat runs before doing anything else...

Also, the marina seems like they'll exchange the incorrect starter for the right one. I'll probably just keep it in the garage for future...

Update: I got the original starter rebuilt for $140 CAD by some nice old Italian guys. Installed it myself over the weekend and got the boat started! (Pretty tough installation with the straight across bolt pattern). Ran it fairly hard... Happy it's working.

Impeller needs to be done as it was running fairly hot... I think it was running hot in the past, causing the ignition to over heat and then cause the boat to die out and leave me stranded on the lake.

Other then that, all seems well. A lot less damage then i thought originally. Got lucky I suppose.

If you are looking for a mobile marine mechanic here is a link. Rob was the mechanic at Hindson in Penetanguishene and worked on my boats for a few years before he went mobile. I don’t use him any more because I find that the marine treats me very well if I patronize them for all my work. But Rob was pretty good I thought.

Thanks, will keep him in mind.

I ended up going to Allport Marina in Bracebridge. They were the ones who gave the best price.

Owner was very nice to chat with and actually gave me a lift to a place I needed to go when I was stuck there. Hopefully all goes well with them. Should get boat back Friday.

The $250/hour for labor equals $520,000 per year. Marine mechanics in Canada do quite well apparently.

Yea, that rate was just insane... Learning slowly but surely about how much things should cost and how to do it myself!
I know some physicians in the states who would be tempted to move to Canada and become mechanics for that rate.
