Boat Flooded, serious issue...

Marine mechanics have their wrist and elbow joints replaced with flexible couplings so they can get into places that us normal mortals cannot. Some things are left to the pros. I will fix a lot of things, but if the part is at the back of the engine room (water pumps on v-drives) or under the engine (starter motors), I am having the marina do it.

For the aggravation it takes to replace a starter on most boats, I think I would stick with OEM or Sierra. I have found the folks below to be pretty good, have order a lot of parts from them over the years. Good service if you call and good prices.

That one is out of stock, but I would be happy to get a Sierra one. I tried calling but no one is answering. How can i make sure I'm buying the correct one?

You should figure out if it's still the original motor. Are the 2 starter bolts in a straight or staggered line?

It's definitely the original engine, starter motor is also original. It has been rebuilt however. I'm not sure about the starter bolts.

Like Bill said, look it up on Mercs site. That's right about the time things were changing back there

I searched it, found the part number. Just placed the order at the Marina. Might as well spend the few extra bucks on the OEM part as it'll probably pay off in the long run.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll get it installed this weekend and likely update you as to what happens.

As you can see in the photos, the starters are very different. Bolts don’t line up and size difference is huge. Not sure how this is possible since I ordered it through the marina based on the engine serial number.

I’m gonna go back to marina with the starter tomorrow and say it’s the wrong one. Does anyone know why it wouldn’t fit if it’s the correct serial number?

you didnt post the serial number but GM 5.0, 5.7, 6.2 all take a staggared bolt pattern , not straight across.

the small starter is a later model gear reduction unit - that is the one on my '05 mpi motors.....most sbc's have both sets of bolt holes but the straight pattern is for a 153 tooth flywheel (positions the starter closer to the crank cl) and the staggered is 168 tooth

Serial number is A341243. Might need to put a 1 infront of the A to search on mercury site.

Mine is a 5.0 and the bolt pattern is straight.

What’s an SBC?

Also, it doesn’t seem like it will fit my flywheel since it’s smaller than the original. Should it?
