What a day on the water!

Saturday we all hop on XRAVENX, John’s small boat for a “Runabout Poker Run”. What a great day for a boat ride. So we precede out of Baltimore Yacht Club for our first stops in Back River. The first stop was at Brewers Landing for lunch, and then the second was Weavers Marina at Riverside. Both were great. So now it is time to head back from Back River and around the corner to Middle River with our next stop being Middle River Yacht Club. Well as we come around the corner we could see thick black smoke coming from BYC! As we got closer our parking lot was full of emergency vehicles. Well instead of going down the river to our next stop we had to come back in Sue Creek and check out what was going on. When we got back in the creek we could see a 30 – 35 foot cruiser fully engulfed in flames. Two fire boats were pumping water on her, but it was not making much of a difference. We watched, from a distance of course, for a while before heading to our next stop. We found out at the stop that the boat exploded at our fuel pier at BYC. They had just fueled up and the guy had a problem starting one of his engines, he went into the bilge to work on it, did something, and when they tried to start it…. Boom! I believe all were thrown into the water, at least two were burned, one serious. . I can tell you one thing you don’t want to see it thick black smoke coming from your Yacht Club. That leaves a real bad feeling in your stomach.

When we came back to the club later in the day the boat was still in the creek, at least what was left of it. All you could see was a melted shell about 8 inches tall in the water. She burned right to the water line. What started as a day on the water for those poor folks turned out to be a very bad day! Just another reminder of how things can go terribly wrong in an instant.

As for our Poker Run, it was great and a lot of fun. Special thanks to John (XRavenX) for letting Sandy and I ride along. Sandy came up with three “3's” but finished 4[SUP]th[/SUP] and out of the money with that hand. Too bad, I could have used gas money!

A great day on the water for us, but a very bad one for someone else! Everyone be careful out there!

Yea, scary........my initial thought when I first saw the smoke was the club house was on fire, then as we got closer and our angle changed it looked like the pier where Michele Ann is docked was on fire. Word going around is the captain had a problem starting the boat and used eather to try to start it. The boat, what was left of it, was gone the next morning. Give credit to the dock hands, who are of high school age, for quickly pushing the boat away from the fuel dock and also shutting off the pumps. Wish you would have had your camera Bill.

We were very lucky, usually the prevailing winds come out of the west or north, and that would have kept the boat blowing back against the fuel pier, blowing the flames in the direction of the pumps. Saturday we had more of a southeast wind and that helped push the boat away from the dock. Your right John the dock hands reacted quickly and correctly, otherwise my BYC membership would be very short!

I'm glad the fuel dock survived. The money in my wallet has a way of jumping overboard right there.

The hosing pushed the boat out of reach of the dock hose. Wow.

I would say based on the video that the fire boat was fairly ineffective spraying water on the fire. I don't think they could direct the nozzle without turning the boat it was mounted on, poor design in my book, not to say they could have saved the vessel, but the sooner it's out the less chance of it drifting into another dock or boat.

After personally watching the whole thing I agree the fire boats were not very effective. At the same time there was no saving this boat anyway, she was fully engulfed in flames by the time the fireboats arrived. They got there quick too! My wife kept saying “Poor boat, Poor boat”….. like it had feelings or something. She gets attached!

How are the people?

Agree the fire boat was, well, saying it was ineffective is putting it nicely.

I got a call from another member of BYC who is an electrician, he has a job going on down at Bayview Burn Center, he actually saw the man who got burned, said he looked like a mummy because of all the bandages. Don't know about the other two.

Like Hack, I saw this first hand, It looked more like the fire boat was just keeping the burning boat away from the numerous private piers.
