I was wondering if anyone has seen this happen and what could cause this? The gasket was a new merc. part. The bolts were tightenen evenly and to spec. Can pressure be a issue? When I flushed engine after using the boat I noticed most of the water coming out the upper holes in the lower unit and not the prop. Is this normal? The boat ran fine all week, so I don't know how long it was like this. The gasket was new when I put it in the water. I am really not worried I have two weeks to fix it. Thanks for any help.

yes

Does anyone know what could cause this? Will it hurt anything? Thanks for any help you can give me. The surfaces were clean and looked flat. I did torque the bolts to spec. making several passes. Should I just try another gasket? I was hoping not to pull the drive until the end of the season for year end service. Thanks again.

as long as it's not leaking water into the bilge i wouldn't worry about it. Just reinstalled my drive this past week and my gasket did the samething. my boats been in the water a few times and never had water in the bilge

1. The water coming out of the upper holes is normal.

2. The gasket looks like it is just squished out from the compression of the two halfs, not blow out from pressure. If it is not leaking gear lube or water, don't worry about it. It looks fine to me.

3. You sure are meticulous about your boat and maintenance! :smt038

It looks fine to me also. If anything, that would be due to overtorqueing the bolts. But you didn't do that, so.... I wouldn't worry about it. I'll have to check what mine look like when I replaced them a year ago, but being black-on-black, it may not be as noticeable. And yes, most water does not come out of the prop when running it on the muffs on mine either.
