Bimini Trip 2013

Because it is spring break and all the half naked college chicks are here, don't want to miss that.........that's a good one....

I wasn't aware of this trend, but it sounds like there's not very big "good weather" window, considering that hurricane season starts in June. But, we have to be more optimistic.

The reason I asked about spring break was b/c x-mas and spring break are longest break kids have from school. So, between the two I thought that in mid April we would better chance (weather wise) to do the trip. According to my preliminary observation, Memorial Day weekend would be a good time slot for bringing the boat back North.

I'll be watching this thread closely as I want to learn more about your trip and start putting a plan together to make it in the near future.

Tom, Just for planning purposes, when are the completely naked Coed's there?

Hi everyone, good posts today! I've been busy and just now have some time to look and respond....

Date for the trip - As Tom said in his post, Memorial Day is considered the "first day of the summer Bahamas boating season". It is certainly possible to plan something before then but the weather is better for boating in June and later. We have planned Memorial Day trips to the islands for years and it turns out to be about 50/50. Question for everyone - is it important for planning purposes to decide the date well in advance (60 days or more) or can we wait until 30 days out?

Who's coming - it is great to see all the folks who are looking to go! I'll do a list and keep it current as we continue.

Plan B - advisable in case weather is not cooperating. I'm open for suggestions

I'm ok with a 30 day window. Also, in my case I would prefer not to go during a busy weekend such as a big holiday. I will accomodate to the majority, but I'd thought I'd mention it...

Maybe 30-45 for us..........hahaha ;) On a bad weather plan B, we could cruise down to where you Ray, and Jack went before

I don't need very many days to plan a trip, 30 days is fine. Reason I would do this on Memorial Day weekend and not an off weekend is we have an extra day (in this case Monday) that businesses are closed. Also, being a business owner, very few projects have ever been started right before a holiday so Thursday and Friday are 'free'as long as we have not pending projects which we can plan for early in that week. If we are to go on a regular weekend, much more planning is involved and if I am to do that I would want to stay for longer then 3-4 days, like the entire week like I am planning for in the late June, early July.

Keys is a great option for contingent planning. I also think this will depend on how many boats go. Hawks Cay might be a nice place as well but not sure slips would be available on short notice. I have never been to Bahia Honda so not sure of activities, slips, power etc. I know it is a State Park but other than that, I know nothing.

Wasn't that Bahia Honda Randy???

On Memorial Day weekend 2009, 6 boats tried to get to Bimini. The seas were rough and we all turned back. We didn't really have a plan B but met up at Bahia Mar Marina in Fort Lauderdale and decided to head south to Boca Chita Key in Biscayne Bay. It turned out to be a wonderful trip, everyone had a great time.

Boca Chita is a small island with no power, no fresh water and only a portolet on the land. It has no docks but allows for side tie ups to a seawall with wood fenders. We ran the gennys for 4 straight days and nights. Some ran out of water, and had to make a run to a marina to stock up.

All in all, a great time where we all made lasting friendships. we have been back several times since then, a great place as long as it isn't in the dead of summer (mosquitoes).

I love Boca Chita that is my local getaway! Thats a good plan B. I little too common for me, but a great option nonetheless!

Update 1/9/13....

Bimini Big Game Club has agreed to provide a group discount for our trip (slips and rooms) and provide breakfast and dinner buffets for us in the Hemingway Room which is a newly renovated private dinning room next to the pool area (awesome place).

Roll call next!

Let me know if this list is good. Later, we'll put names and family/crew names for a complete group list. If there is interest, we can do a Captains meeting prior to leaving.

Do you have any firmer info with regard to dates and length of time you go for at all yet? It takes us longer from the west coast and fitting trips in with biz is not always easy. Our yacht club is planning a trip in May but they are going for 2.5 weeks and we cant be away that long. Thanks!

I understand.

For now, I would say mid April would be the earliest we should plan the trip. Late May is Memorial Day which provides for a long weekend but if the group wants to look in June, that's OK too. There aren't any long weekends in June (in case that is important). most trips like this are 4-6 days.

So based on your post, you won't be attending your boat club's trip because it is too long?

Please let me know what everyone thinks

I'll probably leave out of Port Everglades Inlet, flexible on any dates the majority would like to do.

I'm in for the Kalik and the trip!
