What is best? To install a bimini top on the gunwale or window frame? I have seen both. I do not like the thought of drilling into the gelcoat but think this would be the stronger, more secure way. I would really like to use the same mounting points for the that are installed on each side on top of the window frame that are currently used for the convertable top. :smt101

Any input would be great, thank you.

The bimini on my cobalt has the forward attachment points on the windshield frame and the aftward attachment points on the gunwale. I have had no problems out of either attachement points. The bimini came with boat new so I did not attach it.

Mounting points are a secondary consideration. The first consideration is where you want the top to be when open. Now, if the mounts happen to fall in a place that absolutely, positively won't work, then you move it accordingly.

It'll be fine mounted on either the windshield or the fiberglass. Just make you sure you do it properly.

Sorry, I think I misrepresented the layout of my bimini now that I think about it. It has four soft adjustable attachments and they are all attached to the fiberglass (2 in front of the windshield and 2 behind on the gunwale). The middle of the bimini is a stainless steel pole that is attached to the windshield frame on the top of the side windows.

So to answer your question. Yes.

Thank you for your reply. That is the layout I plan on using. I would rather use the center points I already have than make new holes. The layout will work out with a six foot top.

Thanx again,
