I understand the BIII does not have a water pump integrated within its housing, but rather on the engine. Can anyone tell me where the pump/impeller is on my 5.0L? Is it accessible and a easy task to perform? Will gaskets need replacement at the same time? How expensive is this part?

BTW, this is on a 2000 240 DA.

Bob,
I was facing the same task before last season. Indeed, you have only one with BIII, which as you said the one for the engine. The task is doable if nuts and bolts are not strangers to you. All you need to get is the replacement kit (I got mine at Marine Max for about $96). The kit has the impeller, gasket, plastic housing for the pump and new bolts. This is all you need. I'm not sure the proper terminalogy, but the pupm is located on the same side where the alternator is. So, if you follow it all the way down at the very bottom, you'll see where the hose from the drive is going to the pump and the other going up to the engine's water pump. I don't remember 100% but those look like 1 1/2" or 2" max. hoses. You'll need to find a spot where you can sit or lay down to reach those bolts. On my 240DA there's room on the starboard side right after the waist holding tank. So, I lay there to reach over to the pump. You'll have to see for your self what will work for you.

Good luck,
Alex.

Bob,

In the general discussion forum there is a thread 'download manuals....'. Dave S has a posting there with the mercury manuals.

Also you might amend your signiture to include yr / model of your boat and engine/drive config. It will help people respond to your questions better.

I also have no idea why the reply shows up with a frowny face

Here is a good site for finding parts and exploded drawings for all Mercruiser engines. It helps to have your serial numbers to get the exact picture/parts for your unit. It does not give you step by step instruction like the previous link but the drawings are a little better and you can order your parts directly from them if you want.

Don't buy the kit until after you remove the pump assembly. Two reasons; first if the pump is good condition all you need is the impeller and gasket, secondly the MPI engines that i've had don't use the plastic body, but a bronze one. Remove the pump assembly and assess the style first.

Thanks all for your responses. When I bought this boat last Spring, it had 7 seasons in fresh water and the previous owner said they had never changed the pump. As the boat resides in a brackish water slip (during boating season), and cruises in salt water, I thought it might be best to change the impeller as a preventitive maintenance item. Also, prior to launching this past season I had a "full" fresh water cooling system installed. Does this one water pump circulate that system as well as pumping in raw water for the heat exchanger or are there two pumps involved?

The circulating pump for your closed cooling fresh water system is separate from the raw water pump. It never needs servicing (unless it fails) and is located directly behind one of the upper pulleys.
