Best Harbor in Chicago
So I am going to take a trip to Chicago this weekend, any opinions on the best harbor for a mix of getting downtown easy, and good amenities?

Departing Michigan City, Indiana around 5:00 pm, if anyone wants to convoy.

Or would that be a flotilla?

Also, I am looking for a C-Map card for my RL80C, if anyone has upgraded and has a spare card. (Lake Michigan)

DuSable is our favorite. Right by Navy Pier and the lock, easy access to downtown. We wish you calm seas and sunny skies! Have fun!

I am resisting the urge to go on a rant.

Price isn't too bad. 2.30 a foot, plus 10 for electric at Burnham, that is what I am looking at right now, but the weather looks iffy. I may test out the canvas.

I stayed at Belmont last August.

The thing is, it seems like no one knows what is going on around there. I called Tuesday, they said they would get back to me, then called again today, and they couldn't find my request, said they would call back, haven't called.

So it is in the city that the Daley's built and rule. You should be a contractor there to get the full Monty of the kick back effect. :smt021

I have the direct line to Karen R, harbor master last year in DuSable.
She is best friends with the girl that runs the gas docks in Hammond.
PM me if you want the number.

Scott

I cracked the code.
Give me a call when you need it.

Speaking of Presidential visits — it's impressive to watch the Secret Service and Chicago Cops block off the streets as the Pres moves around. I've seen this a couple times. Out of no where -- cops start closing streets — a parade of black SUVs and limos — then everything back to normal.

If you are looking to walk to/from several restaurants, clubs or other night-life, I say try Belmont.

Should I stay or Should I go...

Weather... Small Craft Advisory... Got my reservations.

Think I may just hug the shore as opposed to going straight across.

It looks like I'm a little too late since you made reservations, but I'll give my .02.

I'm a little biased because I've spent the last five years at Diversey, but if you truly want to leave the harbor and roam a little, check out restaurants, etc. you can't beat Diversey. It's not the cleanest harbor with the most amenities, but you're in the heart of Lincoln Park and everything is walkable. Dusable is a nice harbor, and as mentioned you have Navy Pier, but you might end up cabbing around the city if you want more.

As for the lake...I'm sure you know as well as anybody that the weather is erratic at best. We've been out in small craft advisories when the lake is actually fairly flat, and we've been out on great sunny days when it's miserable. Check the weather and the lake conditions right up to the point of departure and make the call. It's really not that much further to follow the shoreline from Michigan City.

Safe travels...enjoy the trip and the city!

Sorry to "dredge" up an old thread but thought I'd comment...

If you truly want to experience Chicago (not the tourist Chicago), then Diversey and Belmont are the best options. Both of them put you within walking distance to restaurants, urban areas, and local nightlife.

DuSable offers a decent combination of being within taxi distance of the Loop/River North as well as the locks (it's a good mile walk to get to civilization though), but the only walkable restaurants are those on Navy Pier (which is an abomination in and of itself).

Diversey is great because no sail-boaters; you don't have to listen to that annoying rope clank on the masts during a wind.
