What's the best handheld marine band radio, what're you guys using? Recently bough a $89 Cobra and the speaker on it is just horrible, any suggestions?

I have the Standard Horizon HX870. No complaints so far.

I have a couple of the standard horizon models. One thing I personally hate is they don’t have a squelch knob. Instead it’s in the menu which is a pita when I want to adjust the squelch to hear a transmission. Other then that their quality is great and I love my helm version.

I personally like my floating Icom radio. Great reception and very good range for a handheld and it floats.

I have a fairly old Uniden. Works great still (probably 20yrs old now and battery still holds a decent charge) and doubles as the vhf on my center console. I would buy another when the time comes.

My Standard Horizon is 11 seasons old now, and works as good as new. Barring some nicks and scratches, it holds the charge, and like the previous poster, is an excellent backup.
