Im wanting to add shore power and an on board charger to my boat and was wondering what some of the best books are to get to learn more about it.

Thanks

Just received the book and it seems to be a bit outdated IMO.

Any suggestiions on a book with newer technology advice??

Hi Rick,

This book is timeless - give it a chance. The principles of marine electrical work do not change. If you want to either do it yourself or at least understand how it should be done you will not find a better book.

It is not a catalog of new electronics to be sure. But whether you are installing a VHF radio or a GPS the electrical wiring requirements are the same. Especially when you get into 110 volt shore power you better do it RIGHT if you want to avoid electrocuting someone. This book will tell you the RIGHT way to do it.

As far as an information resource about quality marine parts, including 110 volt stuff for shore power, I would check out these two :

I stand by this book. I think after you read it and apply it to your project you will come to understand why I think it is the best guide to marine electrical work.

I have used Power Boater’s Guide to Electrical Systems by Ed Sherman copyright 2000 from McGraw Hill. Chapter 11 has a full section on Ac wiring. It helped me with the wiring of my inverter. I agree that 12 volt and 120 volt principles have not changed but the devices that support charging and isolation have.
