Best Bahamas Publications

Trawlers typically have skegs on the bottom protecting the running gear so bumping the bottom is not a big deal. You or I bump bottom and we hope that all we did was bend a prop and not tear up the shafts, unalign the engine, break some engine mounts, tear up the transmission, etc. Not that I have ever hit anything... much...

Did you go to Spanish Cay? How about Treasure Cay? How about Hope Town? Did you go to Little Harbour? How was the depth getting into Little Harbour if you went there? Was the bronze work by ole' Pete there worth going to see?

Gary - You're right about the trawlers protection, my point was that a boat with 6 foot draft goes in and out without a problem.

I've been to all of those ports except Little Harbor. Here's my opinion of each -

Spanish Cay - more of a fisherman's port more than a "family" marina. The dock had electrical problems when I was there last. A decent restaurant that overlooks the marina. A somewhat reclusive location.

Treasure Cay - Bigger than Spanish or Green Turtle. More of a family destination. They have an outside bars/restaurant at the marina that plays live music. A short walk to the beach where there's a second bar and more live music. Store on site, amenities close by. A good modern marina, lots of boats.

Hope Town - Very quaint and picturesque location. The harbor is smaller that you imagine and is protected on all sides. There can be a shortage of moorings and there are very few slips. No motor vehicles on the island so you have to walk everywhere you go. A good place to visit.

You should consider Man O War Cay. a protected port with a couple of decent marinas. It's a different kind of place than the other spots. It is a dry port so take whatever alcohol you want because they don't sell it at MOW.

Hope this helps!

So... I'll ask more stupid questions...

Everything refers to having to have a yellow quarantine flag to hoist up when you get to a port of entry. Where do you get this yellow flag? Is this a real flag? A rag? Your wife's yellow undies? Your yellow undies? Your neighbor's wife's yellow undies? I can't find any specs on it. And then they talk about having a bahamas flag up while you are there... I assume they give you this?

No stupid questions here, we all did it the first time. Although I've never tried undies, they would probably work. Seriously, you should be able to get both the yellow quarantine flag as well as the Bahamas flag from your local boating supply store. They come in standard sizes. It is your responsibility to have both. As you approach your first point of entry (where you plan to stop first in the Bahamas), you put up the yellow flag to indicate you have not checked in to the authorities yet. Make sure you select a marina that has "on property" check in facilities. After docking, only the captain is allowed to get off the boat before checking in. Take $300 US along with passports for everyone on board to the office and get the forms to fill out. You can take them back to the boat if you want. Once you check in, you take down the yellow flag and raise the Bahamas flag to indicate you have the proper clearance. You don't have to do anything else during that trip, just show the authorities the paperwork if they ask (I've never been asked).

Todd - there are sites where planes have crashed and are sitting in shallow water. It is an awesome dive site.

look at the aerial pics on this site, they are really cool and they will help you understand the islands and marins. I use them all the time.

Been trying to upload some pictures of Bahamas trips but having " learning difficulties"! :smt021 Says wrong file type. After i put my computer back together fom stomping it i will try this again. Randy your thoughts are right on. Everyone needs to spend at least one nite at Double Breasted Cays. If you follow the lewis(explorer charts) or and accurate chart plotter( I had Garmin 3010), go in under good sunlite and go slow you should be under at least 5 1/2ft min at low tide. Check tide charts. I have some funny stories about the first 2 times we went. Big learning curve. Gary, you can get the yellow q flags at Boatersworld or West marine(incl Bahamas flag). JC

Double Breasted is like nothing else. It is a mini paradise. It has so much to offer, such a variety of different things to see, all in a small area. You would think your in a remote island of the south pacific. The water in gin clear and the sea life is abundant. Sand beaches, reefs, ocean 100 feet away, awesome.

While we were there, we went over to Grand Cay and stayed at Rosie's. What an experience that was.

I'll post some pics later tonight.
