Glad I found this forum!!! I recently purchased a 1988 300 Weekender and am trying to get the Benson Windlass working. I hear the motor "run" when activated but the pulley will not rotate either way. I've been trying to pry up the pulley with screw drivers and can get it about 3/16 off the shaft but can't seem to get it off any further. Thinking of getting a puller, but was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions? Would there be something else causing the pulley to bind that can be fixed?

Had a similar problem with the original Benson Windlass on my old 87 300 Sundancer about 10 years ago and wasn't able to get info, manuals, or parts because they stopped making them years ago.
I wound up just replacing it.
If you can't find one around to scavenge for parts you may want to consider down ing the same thing.
If you can't find one to scavenge and would rather not buy a new windlass you can try finding a shop that rebuilds electric motors, take it off and bring it to them and see if they can make it work for you.

Thanks for the reply. I was able to remove it and disassemble the motor which is in perfect shape. The issue is the shaft was totally frozen to the gear cover. After much heating and banging I was able to get it apart, but I don't think putting it back together without the correct parts will last very long so I may just replace it - what model did you replace yours with? Thanks!!

I went cheapomthe first time and regretted it because I had nothing but problems. I eventually got a "Good" Rope/Chain Windlass and Rode. Best move I ever made since I like to anchor out. The Good is bulletproof.
If the original Lofrans on my current boat ever goes I'm going to replace it with a Good.

Reading old posts today.
Anyone still have the old Benson aluminum winch cover. I lost mine to the bottom of Dana Point Harbor.
Advise,
Dave

I know this is an old thread but a little tidbit to the next poor soul who attempts to force the gypsy off the shaft... There is a set-screw hidden in the v-groove of the gypsy. You need to remove the rope to see it. It is located adjacent to the key.

Not sure if anyone is still interested but I currently have a complete Benson windlass in good working condition that I would sell for a reasonable price.

It 200 feet of 3/8 rode new

I was wondering if is the same as mine on a 30ft sundancer

The motor indicates 12volt A 20, no mention of watts

Bill, sorry to bother you about this again would you have a model number ?

No I sure dont
