Beaching your boat

River/Lake sand is different from Gulf/Ocean sand isn't it? I almost wanna say River/Lake sand is not as abrasive as Gulf/Ocean sand but heck what do I know :smt017

River and lake in my opinion are much more dangerous, because you have the potential for rocks or rocky shores. We have friends with a 22 foot Regal Destiny that they regularly "beach" on the lake in a cove and the entire front part of the keel has significant gel coat damage because no matte where you are on our lake there are sharp rocks in the bottom mud. I would NEVER, NEVER beach a boat no matter where. The previously described shallow anchoring options are the way to go with your bow riders.

There are no beaches in N. Texas worth beaching. Most boaters, especially the Possum Kingdom (P.K.) variety, do the raft-up thing.

welcome aboard, i see I have another brother on the BAY. I'm north of you on old tampa bay up in channel A. i guess I'm one of the locuk ones who keeps his boat parked behind the house.

check my post on the "Southeast" I'd like to get a bunch of us together during aquapoloza...2 weeks out..good time to plan the day.

how about you morpheus...you in...

Hey Guys,

I will be at aquapalooza at Egmont in 2 weeks....I have an 2005 180 sport.

Water rat - I moved out to Riverview from St Pete last year. We go out to Beer Can Island off of Apollo Beach all the time. I prefer the gulf water to the bay, but its pretty quick and close to home. You ever go out there?

Thanks for the invite! I am having surgery, so I can't make it this time around.

We don't really hang out at Beer Can. Isn't that mostly a spoils area? That's what is shows on the charts. I read an article about a guy who drowned out there last year. His 22 ft sea ray started to float away (not well anchored) he went to swim after it and didn't make it. Is there much current there? Just wondering.

Get a keel guard, that might help if you choose to beach. Most of the time on the coast we anchor front and back. But at the river most of the sand bars are deep so we nose in and that does the trick.

:lol: :lol: :lol: I'm just gonna keep my mouth shut on this... :cool: :smt038 :smt038

Water rat- the island is just south of the spoil islands...right out in the bay accross from the smoke stacks in apollo beach. I have never experienced any type of strong current...the current at shell island is much stronger. If you are on the channel side of the island, the wakes can kick up from the bigger ships, but otherwise it very calm on the backside. From what I have heard, its privately owned...... its pretty big, and nobody bothers you. Maybe the guys boat drifted into the channel and the water was rough??? Anyway, we go all the time because its very close, but the water on the gulf side is much nicer. Too bad you cant make it to Auquapalooza...good luck with the surgery.

If you guys wince at seeing boats beached on SAND, you should see all the boats beached in the old gravel pits above the Quad Cities in the Mississippi river. The shore is half sand and half gravel or all gravel. Imagine scraping your bow on gravel 2 or 3 times a week. I can't say that I'll never beach my boat. Maybe I'll do it once or twice a season, if that. But never, never on gravel.

Morpheus;

on the anchor for your 240SD I would recommend looking at a Fortress FX-11. it weighs 7 lbs and at proper scope has a holding strenght of 3,600lbs. although the charts say it's designed for a 28-32ft boat I personnally feel that the FX-7 is a little too small.

I have been using the FX-11 since I originally bought it for my 22oSD. What I like about the fortress is that they are very light and easy to store. this is real important when you're swinging an anchor in the cockpit area as you are trying to go off the back to drop the hock.

as for places to put in. if you want a real short ride you can go down to fort desoto park and use the local boat ramp their. as soon as you clear the channel Egmont will be to you're south. if you chose to come out of Safety harbor leave me a note on the quapoloza post and we can meet up and ride down together since I'll be coming out of channel A sometime that morning. Same goes for anyone who might be interested. We could run on Channel 72 and give a call out to meet up along the way cruise togethere.

180 sport;

welcome to the club....hope to see ya on the water.

Sign up is closed, the event is a week away.

For those of us that signed up, we got an activity package this week which basicly says that the even kicks off at 10:00 AM. If you signed up then you need to stop by the registration table and pick up your goodies between 10 and 12. and a Sandwich lunch will be provided along with music from a DJ.

It's not an event that requires you to sign up, unless the freebies are a big deal. I like getting the free tee shirts for the kids; they really get a kick out of them.

They also sent a flier reminding everyone to stay off the bird santuary on the south side of the island.

egmont is a national park they can't keep you from showing up. the event being full only means they wont have lunch for you and you wont get a tee shirt for attending. it does not mean that they won't have enough space in the gulf of Mexico for you to park you're boat and join in the fun.
