So, I replace my batteries with AGM this spring, which has worked out great, now it looks like the battery charger has died. If I leave the charger on with no load the voltage at the inside meter will peg at 16 volts. So I'm guessing the charges is over charging. Any other thoughts, or opions on a new charger. Currently a Pro Mariner 50 amp. Thanks Bob

Hi there, I studied electronics some years ago and you need to apply the old power calculation formula V= I x R http://www.sengpielaudio.com/calculator-ohm.htm
Voltage will definately increrease if you do not connect the load and this does not mean that you charger is faulty, volts don't charge a battery you need to have current, for a true test let the battery run down a bit and then connect an amp meter in series between the charger and battery, if it reads zero amps there could be a broken circuit or the in-line fuse could be blown. Good luck.. David

My Pro Mariner died last year. Called the factory to see if they could fix mine. They didn't want to really fix it but gave me a deal on a new one just to keep me from switching brands. Worth the call and alot less expensive than I could buy it from a dealer.

Dave...how did you know your charger was going out? Did it not charge your batteries? Or did it over charge?

I had the same thing happen. I had an old ProMariner Fly-Back 20-3. It was bad when I bought our boat. I called ProMariner and they offered any new charer of my choice for 50% off list.
I bought a ProMainer ProNautic 1240i with remote display that has a setting for AGM batteries.

Doozie,
What model of ProMariner do you have?

I have a 50 amp 3 bank, I believe they weren't called promariner in 01, some other name I can't think of, I'll give them a call see what happens. Thanks Bob

Jeff,

Sometimes it charged and sometimes not. Did not over charge. If it was not charging, I could turn off the power to it for a minute and it would resume charging for awhile.

I took
todds advice and e-mailed Promariner, waiting to get a reply. Bob

It probably says Professional Mariner on it and is a Black Case?

Call them with the serial # on your unit. That's quicker than e-mail I found.

Doozie ,
I just change my batteries too. I find that if I Turn the charger on it also pegs the meter then over time mellows out . If the batteries are fully charged and I turn the charger off ... then back on same cycle repeats. ( Pegged meter then a gradual decline to zero over 15 mins )

Rob

I did the same, left charger off for a day, voltage stayed at 12, turned it back on and left go back the next day the CO detectors are going off, voltage at 16+. put some load on the batteries voltage goes back to 12, CO detectors go off. So it souds like the charger is putting out mote voltage than it should. Bob

Just curious about what the outcome was?

I happened to stumble across this thread by accident while I was looking up info on my battery charger. In my manual -- Pro Mariner - it mentions that you have to flip some switches if you change to gel batteries (from lead acid).

When I had my 260 - the charger went out. I did the troubleshooting steps in the manuals and determined that the charger was bad. Called Pro Mariner they offered some great deals direct from them. There are switches in the charger for battery types.

I would need to know what model you have but would be happy to help if this is not resolved. Contact me directly 603-766-7603 or jmitchell@pmariner.com
