Do any of you leave the batteries on board for winter storage?

I leave mine on the boat also. However, I make sure they are fully charged before tucking them in for the winter! : )

Yep. I'll be leaving my new Optimas on the wet slipped boat all winter with the bilge heater and battery charger on. Has worked great so far...

3 years on the current set and still going strong. I check the water levels every 1-2 months, add distilled water as needed.

In my situation the boat is on the hard and I have no access or available power to keep the charger on. So should I just make sure that I top off with distilled water. Another question, will the water in the battery freeze?

If the batteries are charged, disconnect them and leave them in the boat. They will be fine.

My view is that:
lifting two batteries out of the engine compartment,
and then
down a step ladder,
and then
carrying them to my truck,
and then
driving them home,
and then
carting them into the basement,
and then
reversing the trip in the spring..........

By now you might get the point that the batteries (and you) are more at risk by doing all that than they are sleeping the winter secure in their battery trays.

I'm having very similar thoughts. I have 4 batteries and my boat will back in the water in just over 4 months. So I am thinking about leaving them in.

:smt009 My only problem is that the marina "requires" the batteries to be removed.. they get $50 per battery to remove them.

I leave all six of mine in the boat with the battery charger plugged in. I've done it like that with each of my three boats and haven't had any problems....yet.

24/7 plugged in when the boat is home. I have a smart charger and just check the water. So far, not had to add any and the batteries are doing well. Will change them out next season for gels and use the current wet cells for my classic cars as spares.

The first winter with our 250DA I took the batteries out and put them in our heated garage. They were fully charged when I pulled them out and I put them on the charger again when just before putting them back in the boat.

The next winter I left the fully charged & disconnected batteries in the boat, in unheated storage. After charging at the beginning of the season they worked fine the whole season.

That was exactly the way I was thinking.

What a scam. How do they justify the requirement that the batteries be removed vs. just disconnected? Lemme guess...another $50 to put each back in too???

Not really a scam. Depending on what condition your batteries are in could be a big issue no matter if they are connected or not. If they are in bad shape they can freeze and crack. Then you have a big mess but also battery acid
is not anything to mess with and could really cause alot of damage. I have helped friends replace a few that took an act of god to get in and out and at that point $50.00 would be cheap as it took me a few visits to the Chiropractor at $35.00 a whack...
