Bait Well Drain Question?

Hi All,

I have a new to me 2004 185 Sport with the Fish and Ski package.

I am trying to figure out the baitwell situation. I was under the impression that to drain the well, I am to remove the overflow drain tube... But that seems to be allowing water in.

Is the drain below the water line, allowing it to fill to the waterline? I recall seeing some sort of plug under the boat when it was being painted.... If that's the case, is there any concern leaving it in the water? I haven't yet replaced the baitwell battery which controls the pump, but I believe that's to pump water in, not out?

Any help would be appreciated.

When you remove the overflow pipe, replace it with a marine plug. Then water can't come back in.

Also, look at the inlet line from the pump. If it has a ball valve in the line, close that as well.

So basically, if there is a leak or rupture in the 'drain' hose, I'm in trouble...

Seems like an odd set-up.

I think they are all that way.

My suggestion was the easy way. But OK, if it makes you feel more secure put the plug on the outside thru-hull instead of inside the baitwell. For the inlet to the pump, pull off the strainer on the transom and replace it with a threaded PVC plug / cap / pipe dope, etc. If the inlet is not on the transom, but thru a scoop on the garboard plank location, then you are at the mercy of the hose anyway.

Regardless, the plumbing is usually bellow decks so it doesn't see an y UV, thus it should last the life of the boat.

Its just like the radiator and heater hoses on a car....inspect/repair/replace and you'll never have a problem.
