Hey Guys,

I got some bad news today....coupler on one of the 454MPI's went out!:smt089 How much to replace/repair and what part number? I found a few different part numbers including: 861523A11, 18311A17, and 861523A9. Are any of these the correct part number?

I had a local mechanic take a look and he quoted me $1660.
Is this a good price. He also said the part was $600, but I found this one for $350. Is this closer to the cost of a coupler?

BTW I have a 99 PowerQuest with original motors and drives with 454 MPI and Bravo ones.

Thanks for the help!!

I can say about the part number, or cost of the part, but the total for the job sounds about right. You have to pull the engine to replace the coupler, and that alone is about 8 hours of labor at most shops.

Thanks!

Anyone know part #'s and cost?

I paid 1,500 to replace mine and I think the part was 600+.

There are more than one applicable part numbers. Some are aluminum allow; others are steel. The cost is significantly different.

I would not try to save a few hundred $ on parts be sourcing them yourself. This is a case where you don't need any finger pointing room if something goes wrong because a do-over is going to cost somebody another couple of days labor. If there is room to blame the coupler and you furnished it to save the mechanics mark up on parts, he isn't likely to do the job over for free. If you buy the parts and labor thru the mechanic and something goes wrong, then you have him hooked up for a re-do.

Solid advise from Frank. had a friend of mine go the "Ill purchase the part" route. The thing went bad and when he went back to the marine mechanic he stated "bad part". Well, I don't think I need to tell the rest of the story. As Frank said, they do it all, they fix if things go wrong.

Sounds like a very good price to me. I had replaced one of the couplers on my 330 Sundancer 5 years ago and the price was $1550 including the $600 coupler. Tough to swallow, but a "must do" repair! Good luck!

I had to replace mine last summer after owning the boat for about three months. My bill was $2,100 but that included a 100 hour service.

I got another bid today...$1700 including two oil drain tubes being put in.

I paid $1740 to replace the coupler in my old Crownline that had a 454. The worn out coupler was aluminum, the replacement was steel.
