My wife and I recently purchased a 2006 Sea Ray 240 Sun dancer. That said, the 1st time we went out the Idler Pulley seized and then caused the Serpentine belt to snap. I change both out with OEM MerCruiser parts. now, the second time out the new belt snaps, I come back to the boat lift, unload the boat, open the hatch and take a look and the belt is snapped again. I feel around on my pulleys and it feels like the alternator had seized. The previous owner had the alternator replaced just last November (NOV of 17), but it does not look to have been a good quality one.
All of this said, I am wondering peoples thoughts OEM parts as apposed to Sierra Marine parts. The Sierra Marine part is a bit less money and comes with a lifetime warranty, however if it is an inferior part to that of OEM, saving money would not be worth it to me.

Any knowledgeable input would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks sr330daguy. I did see dbelectric, however my specific question is how Sierra parts compare to Mercruiser OEM parts. Do you by chance have any knowledge or expertise specific to these two types?

It should be the Mercury 863077T Alternator. I would recommend the OEM. It is too critical of a part to go budget. Leave that for non-critical parts. Google search the part number. There are several places with good deals.

Thanks Eweise for the response. I am tending to lean that way.

Thanks GCHOG, I appreciate the info.

Its a Mando alternator no difference who sells it .I got mine fro DB the only difference is it isn't black

Are you saying you think the Mando makes as good as a marine alternator as an OEM Mercruiser, or a Sierra?

Search for the Leece-Neville brand. They also produce under the Prestolite brand name and are a huge OEM manufacturer for Caterpillar, Cummins, and others. I would be surprised if they don't have a Mercruiser application. Using the OEM maker saves 2-3 mark-ups if you can find the parts online......Merc distributor 20% + Mercruiser about 30% + your friendly local Sea Ray/Mercruiser dealer 100%.

Excellent, that is great to know. Thanks.

a mando alternator is a OEM brand on a lot of merc engines. Both of my boats came with a mando from the factory! So if you want to pay more go merc or pay less and go sierra, both going to be same if thats what came with it from factory.

Thanks! Just to make sure I understand, you are saying that a Mando, and a Sierra are both used as OEM on many models of Mercruiser?

Sierra sells the mando alternators than are OEM on a lot of mercruiser motors. So save some money and buy from sierra. both of my boats came stock with mando alternators

I would have no concerns buying a Sierra alternator, I have used a lot of their parts - water pumps, filters, electrical and even the bellows on my outdrive. I don't recall ever having an issue with any of their parts.
