Back from Bahamas islands trip

That was a bad omon when Mr Cummins let you down. I hope you had a whole lot more fun than you did trouble.

Yea...I bought the dodge for the cummins engine to! Goes to show, the best laid plans even shows weaknesses. Now I'll have to learn to trust Mr. Cummins again.

Over all, better time than troubles. I always enjoy the remote islands. It's something you have to see to appreciate it's beauty. A picture is worth a thousand words...but to see it in person is to fall in love with it.
I also get some sort of feeling of accomplishment when I complete the trip. Kinda like the people whom climb Mt Everset or something, not that I should compare climbing Mt E. to crossing to the Bahamas. Mike

Wow. Thanks for sharing the trip and pictures. Memories to last forever. We'll get there some day.

Mike,

How did you do on fuel crossing over. I'm planning on getting a 280 DA in the next year or so. The Bahamas would be nice to go to in the 280.

What the shortest distance needed to travel there?

thanks

This year we crossed from West Palm, Lake Worth Inlet to West End Grand Bahamas. It's "about" 60 miles across. As I recall, I burned 32 or 38 gals. I'm getting old, "crs" is taking over. A 280 will make it no sweat.
The shortest crossing is probably Miami to Cat Cay, or Bimini. 48 miles? Someone in South Fla will correct me.

Actually I just noticed where you live. Ask around at Peanut Island. There are all kinds of people anchored up "making the trip". Alot of advise there also, some good, some not so good.
I also noticed your boat, your boat will make it to Grand Bahamas, West End. Just barley, but it will. My cousin ran his over a few years back. Pick your weather window!

No way I'll cross with one engine. Thanks for the tips. I'm leaning toward a 290 now. With 130 gal of fuel (30 more than 280), there shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks again.

Alright Mike, When are we going to the Abacos this year?? I'm ready to start packing.............

I haven't sent the check yet, too early, I'm waiting on Mike to get back w/me, and maybe Donnie(but not sure which trip he is planning) We've got time still, stay in touch and we'll all get it together.

Hey Lance, I usually go over around the 4th of july time frame. My cousin and I haven't talked about the trip over yet. I'm still waiting on work to confirm or deny the vacation schedule. When I get the word I can start planning.

Lance when you go over with a fling, where do they take you? Where do you leave from? What islands do you visit? Do you have to hang with your fling mates the whole trip or do you go where you want, then meet back up for the crossing back? How does it work? I haven't ever crossed with a fling. Just wondering.

Do you follow a lead boat? What happens if someone has engine trouble? Do you all wait on the disabled boat? If it gets rough, who makes the call to turn around or continue on?

You make the crossing w/a lead and tail boat Mike. Once over there your on your own to do whatever/go wherever. The boat that brings up the rear waits on the disabled boat. They do an excellent job planning the trip Mike.

New to the boating world of over a 20' run about. This trip sounds like some thing i may be interested in for 2014. Anyone send out info by request? Thanks ahead of time. Should have my 1997 270 da up to the task by spring.....
