I recently had a situation where I had to enlarge the speaker hole at the helm to take out my throttle control box. Now I have to decide whether to fiberglass it back down to fit the my current 5 1/4 or simply buy a bigger speaker and screw it in.
I don't know much about audio. Can anyone tell me what effect adding a bigger speaker (7 inch) would have on the overall sound. Would it cause any distortion or undesirable effects?

Should be OK, if you do a matched pair. However, I don't know anyone who makes a 7" unit.

Best regards,

Bazooka makes 7 and 8'' and I think I remember seeing a 2 7'' speakers in a marine set by Clarion. Thanks Frank

never heard anything from bazooka that sounded real. They are OK if you just want a lot of nondescript thumping. You might want to skip them for music. Clarion makes some decent mid-fi for the boat.

Best regards,
Frank

JL Audio makes a few very nice 7" speakers. Check crutchfield.com they are authorized dealers. 7" speakers will be a big improvement in the bass over 5 1/4"!

The only consideration would be the efficiency of the new drivers compared to the old ones and how well your amp can drive them. Make sure you match the impedance of the new drivers, i'm pretty sure they should be 8ohms. The speakers efficiency should have a rating of something like 87db(not very efficient), up to like 96db as an example. This is the what the speaker will produce with 1 watt measured 1 meter away. If you choose a speaker that is considerably less efficient than the ones you have, you might need a new amp to drive them.

There are no 8ohm mobile speakers. Most are 4 ohms and a few are 2 ohms. There are quite a few 7 inch speaker choices, but measure the hole carefully. A 7" speaker takes a smaller hole than that. If you really have a 7" hole, consider doing something with the fiberglass to decrease it.

MB Quart made a 10" combination speaker for marine use. If your hole is really that big, you may want t look into it.

that's what I get for doing two things at once. You are right, should be 4 ohms. my mistake.

I have had both MB Quart and Infinity speakers and really liked both of them.
Make sure the bigger ones are powered appropriately
