I'm thinking about heading up for this. Anyone else going?

http://ww2flyover.org/ On their facebook page, they indicated that there will be 56 planes participating.

World War II Victory Capitol Flyover
To honor the heroes who fought in the War and those on the home front who produced the tanks, ships, and aircraft that enabled the United States and its Allies to achieve victory, one of the most diverse arrays of World War II aircraft ever assembled will fly above the skies of Washington, D.C. on Friday, May 8, 2015, the 70th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, as part of the Arsenal of Democracy World War II Victory Capitol Flyover. The flyover will include dozens of World War II aircraft flying in 15 historically sequenced warbird formations overhead. The formations will represent the War’s major battles, from Pearl Harbor through the final air assault on Japan, and concluding with a missing man formation to “Taps.” Never before has such a collection of WWII aircraft been assembled at one location, to honor the large assemblage of veterans gathered at the WWII Memorial for a ceremony.

We may be filming this for the National Park Service. They told us the plans will fly over at 1000'. That is pretty low. Should be pretty awesome.

Ryan,

That's awesome!

I read that about the height as well.

I'm hoping anchoring near the Roosevelt and Memorial Bridges will be a good spot to watch.

Mike

That would be cool to see.

Ryan, would those videos be available on anyone's website for the general public to see?

I'll be working (in DC) so I'll have my DSLR ready... maybe try to sneak up on the roof.

I was planning to watch from over by the pentagon grounds, but hosed up my schedule and planned two pier renovation contractors to visit Friday day by mistake. Really annoyed, but I guess boating takes priority! Would love to see the videos if they are available.

I'm still trying to figure out who is going to ride up with me. If no one else commits, I'll make the run upriver by myself.

The video would be property of NPS, but I'm not sure what their plan is.
There's some back and forth whether they want to do it.

If we're not doing it I may grab one of my crews and take the boat out.
Mike.. just south of Roosevelt with a view of Lincoln will probably be the best view.

It also looks like they will go right by James Creek Marina on the south end, so I could watch from my slip.

I'll decide on going out by this evening.

I am going to go out. My plan is to probably anchor just south of Roosevelt, north of the Memorial Bridge. I'll probably leave James Creek around 10:30a.

For everyone else we are going to shoot some video. I'll post online when it's complete.

Ryan,

I'll look for you. My plan is to try to leave the Occoquan between 9:30 and 10.

Still working on my crew.

Sounds good. Have a good trip up. Weather should be great tomorrow.

Mike,

Thanks for posting this. I'm surprised there is not much advertising about the event. That said, I've rallied a bunch of friends and we are headed to Georgetown to watch it from Harbor Place and have lunch. I'm like a kid about this.....Imagine a B-17 flying at 1,000 feet over your head. We have loaded up on cameras both still and video. I would have rather seen it from the water.....but I have an appointment in the morning that just makes that impossible.

John,

You're welcome!

Enjoy!

Great show today. The river was packed in DC.

Here's an initial cut of our video: https://vimeo.com/127312209

Ryan,

Great video! We were running late due to a delay picking up passengers in Old Town Alexandria. We dropped hook between the 14th and Memorial just as the flyover started. We had a great spot until everyone started taking off and then we were rocked pretty well there.

What a great event!

Glad you made it up.
Thats the one problem with anchoring between the 14th St Bridge and Memorial bridge. You'll rock a lot. We usually go off of the northeast corner of Roosevelt. It's shallow and the anchor holds well. Plus the water is nice and calm. We have a kayak on board so it's a great place for people to kayak as well.

We were on the south side of Roosevelt yesterday. It always takes a while to get the anchor to hold and it gets very shallow very fast. Plus there are large rocks that pop out at low tide and hide just under the water at high tide.

I was a bit surprised how many boats were out. It was not as full as 4th of July, but I just had enough room to sing on my anchor.
