So I just get to work and my wife calls me...

"car wont really go"

I tell her to limp it back home, she was only a mile away on the way to work. She calls me 5 minutes later...

"the car wont make it up the last hill around the corner from the house...Im stuck here"

She walks home as I trek back home to see whats up with he truck. I eventually pass her truck on the side of the road, go home, and get chains, my neighbor happens to be home this week, so he offered to pull me so I can steer it.

Get it home, look under, it is a cooling hose that has a leak in it. Figure thats the problem. Go to the dealer, get hose, 6 quarts of J matic fluid, go home change the hose, top off tranny fluid...let it run.

Nothing. Truck wont move. It actually wants to jump a bit when you shift it back into park. No gears work. Call the dealer, they send a tow truck, they have it now, Ill hear tomorrow as by the time they got it today (tow truck took almost 2 hours to get here!) they werent going to start looking at it, and all bays were filled for the last couple of hours of the day.

Here is the thing...less than 2000 miles ago, on a truck that has 55k miles, they did a power tranny flush. So...opinions?

I have my theory after reading up a bit on the net.

You either do transmission service regularly, like every 25,000 miles, or you don't touch it. Once the fluid gets old, changing it seems to just break loose all the crap inside and failure usually follows shortly thereafter.

Every mechanic knows this. Sounds like the service writer got you. First for the power flush then he got you again for the transmission. Got any red hot pokers to shove where the sun does not shine? He screwed you.

Shop around. There are guys who will rebuild your transmission foe less than half the price of an off the shelf rebuilt. Those off-the-shelf ones could be good, or could be a POS. Better to keep your own and have someone whose neck is accessible do the work rather than the dealer who will just blame the rebuilder for any problems.

Best regards.,
Frank

That really sucks - if there is any good news here it happened before the 5yr/60k powertrain warranty expired. Typically the dealers will do a powerflush on transmissions which does tend to loosen quite a bit of grime and it can clog a filter or a passage after a period of time. I've always had good luck with the service and try to get it done on time. I hope this gets resolved soon.

Ok tranny is fried. They are somewhat taking responsibility for it being "possibly" a bad time to flush.

New tranny due in next weds, supposed to have it back by next thursday, Friday the latest. All warranted, no out of pocket expense, and dealer paying for rental truck from enterprise.

So, looks like Im towing the boat for the next week with the Xterra. Went and bought Nissan towing kit and wire harness to install tomorrow, along with Monster tower install.

Im gonna be bi-zay.

sorry to hear the bad news.

time to double up on the guiness!

Ya!! Already done my friend! The cabana fridge has a good 20 something ready for tomorrow!

There is another thread where they talked about the Xterra not having enough towing capacity for a 185 so have you checked into that for your 205?

Frank, explicitly explained as I read up on and feel.

The dealer kind of agreed, reluctantly. THanks for the input.

I thought the truck had 55k, it turns out it has 59, 214! lol...Just made it in under the wire!

Oh shat. My wife decided she want to keep her Honda van for 200,000 miles. She got "brilliant" advice from a motorhead at work that the most important thing to do was get the transmission flushed. Problem: The van has 87,000 miles on it. Despite me telling her it wasn't necessary, she had it done anyway:smt021. Guess I'll just wait for the transmission to fail:smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021:smt021

Odd, my manual says 5000 lbs. Dry weight of my boat is 3150, i have the larger engine which adds another 250, fulltank of gas is 37 galx 6 lbs=another 222, tower is 60 lbs. is 3682, trailer is prob around 700? So around 4300 total I am figuring.

I have an '06 xterra SE, it has an auto trans, 265 hp v6. I know the older xterras only had something like 205 hp or something.

The boat ramp is nicely paved and clean, and pretty flat.

The newer xterras are supposed to be great for hauling in a couple of articles I read.

lol..ya never know. I dont think it is guaranteed you will have problems, but it does seem that way once in the higher milages.

Do what I did...if it fails, arm yourself with some articles about it and then complain lol

Tomorrow? As in why put off Guiness to tomorrow when there is always today?

Ahhhh!! I like the way you think.

If it doesnt rain, im cutting the grass...so I will have one then.

As well, I have hockey tonight, and it is the "official opening of the grilling season" there for us. So tonight at around 1130 pm, there will be burgers, dogs and a chitload of Guiness and other beers to consume. I should be home around 2 am lol.

Ok well as long as you checked into it, didn't want you driving up a hill and suddenly find yourself with no tranny and go back down the hill or the ramp.

yea, true dat Morph!

If the trailer didnt have dual axle surge brakes besides, I would be a little worried about it. But really, I am literally about 1.25 miles or so to the boat ramp, on a side road where there is very little to no traffic. A car goes by at most every few minutes on this road. Im gonna snail it there and back. As well, boat ramp is now closed to anyone but town residents starting tomorrow a.m. There will be almost no one there.

My most nervous part since I am at near tow capacity is pulling it out of the water, but everyone at hockey that has a boat (there are 5 of them) seems to think I will be absolutely fine and not to worry at all.

Sounds good, but keep in mind your surge breaks only work when you stop from a forward motion they do not help you at all when backing up or going up hill.

Oh yea, I know, but it certainly makes a huge difference in braking and going down hills, which was a concern at first for me...the actual stopping lol! I believe the truck has enough HP and torque to move it forward, even up slight hills.

265 hp, 284 lb/tq

I think that should be plenty. I am thinking of low 4wd to pull it ut of water as well to distribute the pull around...does that make sense or should I just stay in rwd?

Opinions?
