Are you over 50? .........read this.

I just wanted to add as long as your going in for a lower GI you may as well get the upper GI done at the same time with all the folks with GERD it can be a silent killer too me included, I had some heart burn & took over the counter pills for it. When I had both ends done I found out there was scaring damage done to my esophagus, I changed my diet it helps but I'll be on pills for the rest of my life. My uncle died last year from Cancer of the Esophagus he put off going to the doctor for years and lived with heart burn, when they did the upper GI it they diagnosed him with less than 6 months he made it a 1 1/2 years.

Yes, Barret's esophagus is quite scary. I had GERD before anyone knew what it was. One doc diagnosed it as pleuresy and gave me anti-inflammitories...lit my reflux up like a christmas tree, thought I was dying. Finally found a doc who was willing to investigate. I am 49 and the reflux started at 18. I had an upper endoscopy every year from age 28 to 43. At that time they discovered that if you don't develop cancer of the esophagus in the first 2 years of GERD you are very unlikely to develop it due to GERD (alcohol is another story), so I got to go to every 5 years. When I was 42 my dad had polops removed, so my doc said "time for the colonoscopy. You have 2 risk levels at this point: likely and definately". So at 43 I got the double deal, upper and lower...told the doc to start at the top...I think he laughed but the drugs hit and I was out. Had another 2fer last year. Still clear and worth the piece of mind.

Easy procedures, don't put them off, the alternative is not worth avoiding the slight discomfort of the prep. I watched a whole season of Mad Men last time I preped, kind of enjoyed it.....just sayin'.

Or in the UK with their national health system. According to an MD friend of mine, who practices there, she couldn't believe we have it done under anesthesia in the US. If you've been advised to have one......Get 'r done:)

Thanks for the post. I'm 30 and have had some digestive issues for a few years...Doc recommended a colonoscopy a few years back and I chickened out. May just need to bite the bullet as the general consensus is it's no big deal.

Sorry I'm late getting in here but I've had three since I was 50. Unfortunately I know how deadly this can be as I lost my oldest sister to Conlon Cancer in 2006 at only 56. She was sure something was wrong but wasn't found till she was stage 4 and we tried everything. UVA did what they thought they could do and I took her to Sloan Kettering in NYC and they did what they cold do but she died at my mothers home two days after Christmas in 2006. Changed my life and started doing things I wanted a little more often including the purchase of GT in 2007.

My middle sister only wanted one thing for her birthday for a couple of years from her son and you guessed it he turned out to be at Stage 3. The Tennessee Hospital sent him to Duke Medical Hospital as that’s where they wanted him to go. This was late last year and he is in remission and just moved to California with his wife for a job offer she couldn’t turn down this past July.

I have three children with the oldest now being 34 and the youngest being 27, you guessed it as they have all had theirs as there obviously is a gene in the family tree that has hit 2 we know of so we take it serous. We have two grandsons currently as yes they will follow doctor’s recommendation from the time they hit twenty with whatever type of recommendations are appreciate at that time medically wise. I must say that I always look forward to the nap but hate the **** you drink to get ready. Small price to pay vs. sticking the head in the sand method.

While I’m at it, Merry Christmas to all and hope you all have a Happy New Year. Wish more of you were going to be in Key West for the New Year’s Eve with our group of CSR members whom will start the party without ya!
