I just wanted to add as long as your going in for a lower GI you may as well get the upper GI done at the same time with all the folks with GERD it can be a silent killer too me included, I had some heart burn & took over the counter pills for it. When I had both ends done I found out there was scaring damage done to my esophagus, I changed my diet it helps but I'll be on pills for the rest of my life. My uncle died last year from Cancer of the Esophagus he put off going to the doctor for years and lived with heart burn, when they did the upper GI it they diagnosed him with less than 6 months he made it a 1 1/2 years.
Yes, Barret's esophagus is quite scary. I had GERD before anyone knew what it was. One doc diagnosed it as pleuresy and gave me anti-inflammitories...lit my reflux up like a christmas tree, thought I was dying. Finally found a doc who was willing to investigate. I am 49 and the reflux started at 18. I had an upper endoscopy every year from age 28 to 43. At that time they discovered that if you don't develop cancer of the esophagus in the first 2 years of GERD you are very unlikely to develop it due to GERD (alcohol is another story), so I got to go to every 5 years. When I was 42 my dad had polops removed, so my doc said "time for the colonoscopy. You have 2 risk levels at this point: likely and definately". So at 43 I got the double deal, upper and lower...told the doc to start at the top...I think he laughed but the drugs hit and I was out. Had another 2fer last year. Still clear and worth the piece of mind.
Easy procedures, don't put them off, the alternative is not worth avoiding the slight discomfort of the prep. I watched a whole season of Mad Men last time I preped, kind of enjoyed it.....just sayin'.
