Are there good reasonably safe places to overnight on the hook on S Lake Mich?

On Lake Michigan and reasonably safe is a loaded question. Weather changes quickly:huh:.

I would recommend a protected harbor such as the cove at Saugatuck or Port Sheldon.

Both are nice places to stay protected and on the hook.

Saugatuck has a muddy bottom so we usually throw two anchors, but there is a nice dinghy dock that allows you to get easy access to town.

I believe some anchor just east of Michigan City between the harbor and Mount Baldy. The harbor does protect that area, but like many others I've never done it. Would love to, but not sure I have the guts

We are just returning to Grand Haven after having spent more than a month cruising northern Lake Michigan. We do anchor out in Lake Michigan in Harbor Springs This is Little Traverse Bay and well protected. In Saugatuck, on the Kalamazoo River there is a great spot just inside the inlet that is also well protected. In Grand Haven, your best bet is to overnight at the north end of Spring Lake a mile south of the northern end. Water depths in these areas range from 18 feet in Harbor Springs down to 8-10 feet in the other locations. We have anchored on South Manitou Island during the day, but never over night. I've seen some badly damaged boats over the years that have been lost due to strong east winds. It's not worth the risk in my view.

Don't tell me that, I'll probably be spending the night anchored at South Manitou Island Sunday into Monday.

Great spot. You will need to be close to the beach as the water is 55-60 feet deep 200' or so off the shore. The new Leland Harbor is great as well.

So it seems that most overnight in a slip? Is it the same for the Ill-Wis side?

MM

MM- Milwaukee has three good spots, Discovery Cove, Summerfest Lagoon, & Oklahoma Beach. All are well protected. Very safe on the hook. Summerfest Lagoon also has slips and is a state park. Discovery Cove has a wall you can tie off at w/ power too. Let us know if you would like more info. Good luck on your ventures.

Mike
