What do you mean on the outside looking in?

Not part of the ring, we usually raft up outside as to avoid any problems .had a few near misses with the 320.

We will be on the outside as well... Probably by the beach on the north side... They do organize it pretty well if you want to join the ring... But you gotta stay all day...

We are going as well. We will likely be in the main raft up. We have done it for several years and have not had any real problems. We are usually there for the full day, so we don't mind that part. I can come and get anyone with the dinghy who wishes to stop by.

In case anyone did not see it, here is the Captain's Letter Marinemax sent out:

AquaPalooza 2014 is almost here, Safety First!

Below is information we would like you to have so that you are prepared for the big day.

We’ve compiled the following to help you have a memorable day:

Entering Zach’s Bay
Enter Zach’s Bay using the WEST entrance and upon entering, head west toward the Jones Beach Theater. Note: when you first enter Zach’s Bay through the WEST entrance, you will see an old pole that most people think is a marker. It is important to keep yourself between the pole and the marsh as the water is very shallow on either side. If you are unfamiliar with Zach’s Bay, wait for additional traffic and follow someone in.

Safety
Please note: NO motorized rafts allowed in the swimming area. Floats only!

The Marine Police will be in the area patrolling. Please be smart with regard to the consumption of alcohol. Remember when you are leaving, make sure there are no open bottles on your boat.

Equipment Requirements
The United States Coast Guard sets minimum standards for recreational vessels and associated safety equipment. To meet these standards, required equipment must be U.S. Coast Guard “approved” or “certified.” This means that it meets U.S. Coast Guard specifications, standards, and regulations for performance, construction, or materials.

LIFE JACKETS (33 CFR 175)
You may have heard reference to Type I, II, III, IV, and V “Personal Flotation Devices” (PFDs). The term PFD is used in strictly regulatory sense. For greater clarity, this publication will use the term “wearable life jacket” and throwable device. “Understand that Type and Number refer to the same equipment whether called a PFD or life jacket, and that any PFD is approved for use anywhere.

All recreational vessels must carry one wearable life jacket for each person on board. Any boat 16 feet and longer (except canoes and kayaks) must also carry one throwable (Type IV) device. Life jackets should be worn at all times when the vessel is underway. A life jacket can save your life, but only if you wear it.

Always check and read the manufactures’ information booklet and label provided with all life jackets. They will provide valuable information, including size, type, intended use, and Coast Guard approval information.
Life jackets must be:

  • U.S. Coast Guard-approved (check the label.)
  • In good and serviceable condition.
  • Appropriate size and type for the intended user.
  • Properly stowed.

Some items that are not required but are a good idea to have with your life jacket are a whistle and an emergency light.

Rafting with your friends:
If you would like to be next to your friends in the raft up, you need to arrive together. We will have 2 separate lines for the raft up. A “big boat” line and a “small boat” line. If you have a boat larger than 31 feet you will be on the big boat line. If you are coming with friends whose boats are smaller than 31 feet, you will be rafted in the smaller boat line. For safety reasons, we will not raft small boats in the big boat line.

Leaving Early?
If you plan on leaving early please DO NOT raft up with the large group. It will be impossible to get you out safely, and we will not make any exceptions. If you do need to leave the party early, you can hang out around the outside of our boats and still enjoy the party.

Leaving at the end of the Event:
When the DJ stops playing at 5pm, we will begin the process of breaking the lines. You will see MarineMax staff members in boats coming around to assist you. Please! For the safety of everyone, do NOT untie yourself from your neighboring boat on your own until given direction to do so. We will detach boats from the ends of the lines and work our way to the middle. Please wait patiently so we can get everyone out quickly and safely.

VHF
The MarineMax team will be monitoring VHF Channel 69 and will be directing the raft up via this channel. When you arrive, please contact us on Channel 69.

Start and End Time
The event officially begins at 12 pm and is scheduled to run until 5 pm. You could begin arriving from 10am on.

Rafting
Safety is always our number one concern. Because of the number of boats that will be joining us this year, unsafe boat operating will not be tolerated. Please be patient with the MarineMax staff as you are lining up for the raft up. Any delays you experience prior to rafting will be the result of our team safely securing other participants’ vessels and preparing for the entry of your boat.

Set your lines and fenders. Please have all your fenders set upon entering Zach’s Bay and be prepared to throw your lines to MarineMax staff so they can secure your boat quickly and efficiently. Our staff will walk across your bows and sterns in an effort to get all boats rafted quickly and safely. Bring extra lines, a minimum of 2 fenders, and an anchor; please bring a stern anchor if you have one. Upon arrival, please let the captain know if you have a stern anchor.

Music
The DJ kicks off at 12 pm. We will also be transmitting the music and making announcements on our AquaPalooza station. We will announce on VHF channel 69 which station you should tune your radios to when you arrive.

Photographs
We will have photographers snapping pictures during this event. Remember memorable poses get attention. Keep in mind, though, this is still a family event, not Spring Break. J

Have Fun
Most importantly, let’s have a good time on the water responsibly! Let’s use this day to celebrate! Make sure to bring you bathing suits, rafts, and water toys!

See you on the water!

The MarineMax Team

Wow it only took them 7-8 years or a law suit to come out with guidelines. As I stated ! I will be outside the ring of fire (alone prob) but safe

A few years ago I was set adrift with 5 other boats attached because someone wanted to leave. I had to start my engines and drop anchor to slow the unattended boats. The crew where scrambling to get on the boats and try to start them as we floated into other boats nearbye. I agree it's better now but I'll never forget it.

I think I remember seeing that happen.

That was really the fault of the departing captain who did not make sure the other boats were secure or at least attended too, before departing.
It is a lot better now.

I can understand your apprehension after something like that but I will say that last year they did an amazing job. Roughly every 3rd boat had a front and rear anchor set so even if someone breaks the rules and unties early, there should be little if any drift. I feel like I would be missing all tue fun if I were outside the circle. Either way, I'm sure we'll see you there. Lets all hope for great weather and a safe and fun party.
