I currently have a Garmin 3210 (10" display) which, while the large display is great, it is much too large for my helm area. So I'm considering going to a Garmin 740s which is a 7" display. I'm trying to find a compatible mount to go with it at the helm, but haven't been successful in searching one out. Does anyone have this chartplotter and have it externally mounted? If so, I'd like to know what you used to mount it.

Thanks,

Tom

I don't have a 740, personally. But I do have RAM mounts on various personal boats - they are excellent. At the shop, we use the various RAM mounts all the time - including when we've installed 740's. You won't go wrong with a RAM
mount. We typically use clam shells to help hide the wires as they go through the dash, by the way.

I don't know your helm layout but any way to flush mount? Get a new panel from VectorLED and make it super clean. Good luck, MM

No way to flush mount it. That would be nice though.

Maybe the 740 is too new to get good info on? None of the RAM mount retailers have the 740 as an option to find a compatible mount. I guess I will try to find an older GPS of same dimensions and see what they use.

Thanks,

Well, as I mentioned, we've used RAM's with 740's. Isn't that what you wanted to know?

Now, if you're asking more about what specific model of Ram Mount to use... no, it's not as easy as "give me a mount for my Garmin 740". We never use mounts that are "custom". We use the generic mounts that are available and then just size the ball mount and arm length appropriately. Some of our suppliers are carriers of this kind of stuff so we get the items through them, but you can order right from RAM's website. Go to RAM's website (look under "components") and look around, or give them a call.

Thanks Dennis, that is what I wanted to know. But I really wanted to know a little more specifics. When I have ordered mounts previously, I would just go through a set of selections, specifying type, brand, etc. to get to a couple of items that would fit. But this GPS does not exist in any database I've found.

Now having researched RAM mounts more, I now know how flexible they are! I found the class of mounts that fit my weight category (class B), and then found a whole slew of bases, arms, extensions, etc. to pick and choose from. I had no idea I could do that.

So thanks for your help, I've found my solution!

Good, Tom. Yeah, the only "pick my GPS" ones are typically the small ones. Now that I'm thinking more about this, I think we've been using the 1-1/2" ball (I forget if it's the B or C class) simply because there is a larger (rectangular) mount available. Unless something has changed, the rectangular mount that is (was?) available for the 1" ball wasn't quite big enough.

Yeah, the RAM stuff is pretty amazing and versatile. Did you find the Universal PDF Catalog? http://www.ram-mount.com/SupportCenter/Catalogs/tabid/322/Default.aspx
