Everyone should have one car that's a convertable. Started out in the 60's with a red Fiat 125. Great looking car that I bought new. It was a great handling car for its day and a real POS from a quality perspective. We nicknamed it the Fiasco. Sold it after 2 years and drove a hand me down Mustang. Baby enters the picture and it's Chevy Impala 2 door hardtops. Great cars at the time but man were they "boats." After a series of GM sedans, quality finally got to me and it's been Acura coupes since '86 until the roof lines got so low I hit my head on the headliner. I like the TLs and have switch between 6 speeds and manual automatics which is what I have now. I broomed out my 78 Vette 6 years ago after realizing that even sedans handled better and were faster. Bought my first Audi TT as a fun car when we sold the vette and we are on our third one. We alternate between silver and black. The 2006 is silver and will be sold this March. It will have 14,000 miles on it and shows like new (any interest???). I'm going to order a new TT with 19" wheels, black over black roadster in December so it will be in stock this March. I got tired of the constant maintenance with old cars. The tires, belts and hoses wear out from age long before treads, etc., are worn. I like to drive them rather than work on them.

I was never into the 60's and 70's muscle cars (a bit before my time), mine is a garage queen '93 Mustang Cobra. Vibrant red, all options, #1330 out of 4993. My plan is to hold onto it for a few years, but might have to sell to pay for fuel next year!!:smt089

My office neighbor has a '67 Mercedes C230(?)....What a buttery smooth ride.
Was actually entered in a competition and used in a Ralph Lauren advertisment....

I restored cars for the first half of my adult life. It started by going to a trade school in Germany. I then worked for Stauffer Classics in Blue Mounds WI which was at that time the current DeTomaso importer. We serviced DeTomaso, restored Cobras, and restored GT40 #1046. Prototyping aftermarket aerodynamic styling kits under the name GST by Stauffer was another business sideline. In the late eighties I moved to Phoenix and worked for a restoration company that specialized in the high-end speculator cars for the Blackhawk collection, the Barrett-Jackson auctions, and for the Pebble Beach C d'E. I remember a Maybach that went out to auction in white and came back again immediately after the auction. I assumed we had something to repair. Nope. We repainted the car green and reupholstered the interior in a different color of leather so it wouldn't appear to be the very same Maybach at the next year's auction! Some of my favorites were a Mercedes-Benz SSK, an Auburn Speedster, Ferrari Daytona, Lambo Muira, a V-16 Cadillac, a Bugatti for Leno, a Delahaye for Elton John, and The Oldsmobile F-88 show car that sold for $3.24 million at the Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. The winning bidder was Discovery Channel founder John Hendricks, who purchased it for the Gateway Colorado Auto Museum he is building in Gateway, Colorado.

The story of that car is an interesting read for car buffs. I still remember when I first spoke to Lon about a job. He brought me back to the car and asked me if I could make a car out of THAT (pointing to the sagging relic of a fiberglass body on an old chassis). I said sure!

I owned a few Mopar muscle cars but I'm a Nissan guy now. I wish the garage contained a race 240SX, a Skyline, a G37 and an M45, but all I have is the Titan tow vehicle and the non-Nissan company car. :( I'd kill for the new GTR when that comes out.

That's quite a background you have in restoring cars. Looks like the story behind the f-88 is an interesting one as well. I sort of skimmed thru it and will read it thoroughly when I get a chance. Did you restore your Sorrento or have you done any restoration work on other boats?

Dave

In case anyone is interested, here is a heads up on a program about the Corvette being shown on TV tomorrow evening. It should be interesting whether you are a Corvette fan or not:

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and its Bowling Green (Ky.) Assembly Plant will star on the National Geographic Channel's popular Ultimate Factories series. Other Corvette-centric locations displayed on the show are GM's Performance Build Center in Wixom, Mich., the Milford (Mich.) Proving Grounds and Bowling Green Assembly. Additional filming was done at Pratt & Miller, which builds the C6.R racing Corvette, and Dana, which makes the space frame for the Z06. The hour-long show about Corvette and Bowling Green Assembly is scheduled to air at 10 p.m. (ET), Nov. 29.

Here is my 59 MG that sits around at work most of the time in the warehouse. Runs perfect, drive it all of about 20 hrs a summer. I keep it basically to give to my son at some point when he gets older.

I own a 55 (snowshoe white), 56 (peacock blue), 57(flame red) and 66 (candy apple red) tbird. I restored the 55 in 1990 and it took second place in the International tbird convention (390 tbirds) held in Williamsburg, VA that year. The 56 I restored in 2002 took first place in 2003 at the Portland West Coast tbird show. My 57 is unrestored as well as the 66 which is candy apple red and a convertable. I'll have to upload a couple of pics of my 66 and 57...

I have also owned a 53 and 54 F100 trucks...

My dad is the old car restorer though I have had a few Muscle Cars in my day. He always finishes his projects and they look great. Of course being semi-retired and self employed gives him a bit more hobby time than me and my 9-5 job.

His - 60 T-Bird, frame off restoration
48 Ford - current project code named "Maybeline"
Couple of 50's era Fords

Mine - 71 & 72 Mustang Mach 1
73 Mustang Fastback 6cyl (my first car)
73 Camaro
78 Z28 Camaro
00 Camaro Convertible
75 Corvette (only one left, currently in the garage)

I drive an 06 Mustang, 6cyl, daily driver for me. I will probably finish basic cosmetic restoration to the Vette(mechanically sound, just needs new interior and seals) and sell it for more boat $$ !!!

I owned two MGA's myself "back in the day". My first one was a 57 MGA. It became pretty troublesome and I bought a new MGA in 1960. I really liked that one but didn't own it too long. I had to give it up to buy something more "practical" for the family. I still have the original MGA shop manual somwhere around the house and I still have a soft spot for MGA's when I see one.
