If you are a South Carolina resident and have a boat that is documented (and therefore not registered with South Carolina DNR), do you still pay personal property tax on your boat?

I know nothing about taxes in South Carolina, but I can guess. Like most states, if you live in the state and keep your boat there they will find a way to tax you without regard to where or how the boat is registered/titled or documented.

Dave,

A friend of mine was able to avoid the tax for a few years by documenting his boat. However, the local taxing authority eventually noticed his boat docked at the marina and sent him a bill for two years of back taxes.

That is what I was trying to find out. I know someone who has a 38DA that has "avoided" taxes for many years by having a documented boat. I guess you can slip thru the cracks like that occasionally. All I know is I am not looking forward to my next tax bill since mine IS registered with DNR. :smt021 :smt021

Both of my last 2 boats were documented. It took less than a year for the county to catch up to me on both occasions.

it doesn't matter how you register it, you always pay property tax.
The method of registration does not affect that you own property that is taxable. The VA DOR does do marina surveys to identify new boats
