anyone have these racor filter gauge?

It looks like a great idea. I hope we hear good feedback on these as I'll be looking to add them as well.

Don't you guys have dual Racors.........Randy, you should as much off shore running as you do..........?

If you do, the Racor manifold has a plug in the center where you can install a real gauge ....the one from Racor is expensive, but has a tell-tale on it. Like this:

I don't know anything about this store, I just wanted a clear photo of the Racor gauge.

If you have a single Racor, then Racor makes an analog gauge that fits in the T-handle hole just like the one you referenced or can be plumbed into a fitting on t he inlet side of the Racor housing:

I have restriction monitors just like the one you asked about on the air intake breathers on a dozer, a backhoe and 2 tractors. I don't like them because they are difficult to read and their accuracy is highly variable which would make monitoring both sides a challenge.....which do you believe if they are different? The other problem may be the clearance above your filter housing.

I've seen that gauge before and could not justify it for the price (x4). It is easy to change out the filter.

do you have the restriction monitors on the Walker on your 3116? Mine came with it.

I put those FuelFixers gauges on my boat just a month or so ago. We haven't really had a chance to test them but we're heading out Thursday for a 4-day trip. I'll let you know what I find out.

will you be running allot on the trip? I'm not sure 4 days is enough time to test them. It may take a month or two

You may never get to see them work..........

I've owned my boat 15+ years and the reading on the gauge is right at the tell-tale mark every time I check it. You will only see it register a reading when your filter is restricted. I treat my fuel religiously, keep my tanks full and change my filters every December whether they need it or not, so I never see a restriction.

Randy,

Yes my Air-Seps have the restriction gauge on them.

Frank,

I have single racors and change them every fall regardless. I guess the gauge is an insurance in case if one gets a bad load of fuel?

Do you have a link for the AirSep gauges?

Thanks Randy,

I just realized that you guys were talking about replacement part and completely forgot that Airsep has the gauge. At what point you need to replace them? Is yours stuck and no longer shows the valid reading or is it part of your routine maintenance?

Alex,

They work the same as the Racor one, i.e. they monitor the air restriction by registering a vacuum. For me, they are just like the Racors......I wash my Air-Sep filters every fall as part of me annual maintenance and never see a restriction. in fact, I doubt you would ever see a restriction on a pleasure boat since area around the breather is very clean.

Diesel engines need a lot of air and one of t he signs of restricted intake air is soot on the transom.........I think you'd see the soot before you ever noticed the gauge.

Thanks Frank. That makes a lot of sense. I guess unlike the Racors, theoretically Airseps should stay clean without a "shock load of dirty air" and periodic maintenance should be all that we need.

Nice tip on the soot. It adds another variable of having the soot on the transom. So, it's not just overloaded engines.

I had the FuelFixers on my 48 (along with a Racor guage on each set of Racors). The difference based on my understanding is that the Racor gauges are really only useful while the boat is underway and there is load on the engines, the idea of the Fuel Fixers is that you can go look at them and see where things were on the trip you last completed. That said, I never saw anything but green on them and still replaced my Racors on a schedule regardless. Bottom line, while it's an interesting idea personally I don't plan to add these to my next boat - but then again my next boat I don't plan to take to the ocean so different considerations than my last boat ...
