Anyone boating on a regular bases around this area? Where do you anchor or hang out?

There are few decent anchorages south of Morehead. I haven't been in your areas yet but I'm sure they are bound to be better than what we have down here since all we have is a ditch to run. Have you ever been or looked into Cape Lookout Bight? Been several years for me but is by far the absolute best NC has to offer. In your size boat its only accessible from the ocean side leaving Beaufort inlet. Well worth a long weekend trip, bring dinghy. Once ashore, you can explore the uninhabited island of Cape lookout and also Shackleford Banks where the wild horses are.

Check out cruisersnet.net for anchorages, waterway conditions and marinas all along the coast of NC

There is mooring available in Banks channel between wrightsville beach and harbor island. There are also a few coves on the ICW side of Masonboro Island - watch out for the tide, though!

There are also some quiet marinas that allow transient dockage with water and power. Masonboro yacht club and marina (910) 791-1893 is one that is convenient to Masonboro Island.

If you make it as far as Tidewater, one place you can enjoy is the Norfolk & Portsmouth waterfronts.

There is a marina in Portsmouth that is adjacent to the nTelos amphitheater. You can enjoy the sounds of the concerts from your boat, or you can walk there and see it too.

If you are as old as me, you may like some of the shows they have scheduled this summer...Steve Miller Band, Crosby Stills and Nash, Loggins & Messina, ZZ Top. There are others too. Try this link:

There are some good restaurants right in Portsmouth, or you can take a ferry across the river to Norfolk, where there is shopping and tons more places to eat.

We will often go to see the Norfolk Tides, a AAA baseball team, when we stay in Norfolk or Portsmouth on the boat. You can walk from downtown Norfolk, or take the ferry to the game.

I'm in Kill Devil Hills so not too far away from you. We typically boat near us since we're working so much lately so stay in the sounds so the kids can do some tubing. I also go out of Oregon Inlet when I can get away for some fishing. Heading north into Virginia is a really fun trip - the Dismal Swamp canal is really nice as is the Portsmouth/Norfolk waterfront. We just went a couple of weeks ago and stayed at Waterside Marina - small but it's walking distance from the mall which the family insisted we go to. It's also close to Hooters....:smt038

We stayed across the harbor last year at Tidewater which is really nice and is close to some really nice restaurants and bars. I believe it is also the one Emjay is referencing. You have to watch the bridge and lock openings but it's a great trip and one I plan to do a few more times this year. One variant is to take the ICW to Elizabeth City and then the Dismal Swamp over to the Elizabeth River instead of going through Coinjock.

We found a little party cove just off the Elizabeth River on the Dismal Swamp which opens into a small lake and quite a few boats. The good news is the opening is about 5-7 feet deep so larger boats can get in and then the lake is as deep as 14 feet in spots. Anchor up and watch people skiing, jetskiing, etc - or join in. Lot of fun - then you can head into Norfolk for the night and actual dockage if you don't want to anchor out.

Thanks for all the input. We do get out to Ocracoke Island, Manteo, Morehead City and Washington often. We will try the Portsmouth area now also. Thanks for the links!
