I am from Indiana and looking for a change of scenery. Thought about going to Captain's Quarters and eating. Where is a good place to launch from and where do most people hang out? Any beaches close by?

Several nice ramps in the area. Duffy's landing in Jeffersonville. Free public ramp with parking Straight across the river on the Kentucky side is the Cox's park ramp. Also free with lots of parking.

Captains Quarters is a popular eatery at the mouth of Harrods Creek. A little farther up the creek is Cunninghams. Harrods Creek is a no wake zone. Both places have boat docks and they tend to fill up quick at meal time.

There is a place referred to by locals as Party Cove where people hang out. It's between the upstream end of 6 mile island and Captains Quarters on the indiana side. It was a former sand and gravel quary that is now open to boaters despite the keep out signs. Most people anchor and raft up there. It's about 65 feet deep so you need a long anchor line. bottom is sand/gravel/mud.

Also lots of folks anchor on the Kentucky side of 12 mile island. The barge trafic follows the channel on the Indiana side of 12 mile. Or you can beach and explore the island. There are even stairs on the upstream end that go from the beach to a park area up top.

And lets not forget downstream from Duffy's landing. Towhead island on the Ky side of the river has public docks behind it and Tumbleweed Diner. Tex Mex fare. The Ky side of towhead is a no wake zone and home to the Jefferson County River Patrol so it is enforced.

If you need any more info or have specific questions feel free to ask.

Yes folks stay on 12 mile island in the boat usually beached and tied up to the bank on the KY side. 6 mile island is a wildlife preserve and barges fleet on the KY side of it so no people stay there. But on up river is 18 mile island. The beach area is actually wider on the Indiana side and you can tent camp and have a fire to make smores, roast hotdogs ect. There is also a rope swing at 18 mile island on the KY side of the island. Also in that area is Rivers edge marina. Fuel and boat supplies and some repair parts in case of emergency. They also make a pretty good pizza and have hot sandwiches.

But if you are really interested in Camping and staying a few days check out Charlestown State Park.

They have Camping and a nice Boat ramp also. Although not a great place to tie up the boat while you park the trailer, so have someone who can drive the boat or park the truck with you. It's a small floating dock suitable for passenger pickup. And it's located right between 12 and 18 mile islands. so you are right by all the fun stuff.
