Is their any easy way to check exhaust flappers / water shutters on a 5.7L Alpha 1 without having to pull the exhaust elbows and tubes? Last time I replaced them, the tubes were a bear to get off x 4. How long do they last? I haven't any ticking noise but on the other hand, there wouldn't be any noise if they washed away.

You could buy or rent one of these...might be long enough to look up there from the stern. There are a few companies making these fairly cheap now.

The best way I've found is to listen. They are metal with a rubber-like coating. If the coating is gone you can hear them tapping. If you hear them it's time to replace.

This is not a hard job if you have decent access.

Replaced mine last year. Here is a shot of the new style replacements.

Mine were shot also I found them when I pulled the out drive off. Half from each side were laying in the exhaust outlet blocking about 1/2 exhaust in front of the bellows and when I pulled the elbows off the one on the Port side had flipped over and was blocking 1/2 the exhaust on that side. I am glad I decided to change the water pump or I would have never even thought about it and could have ended with an engine full of water on thee maiden launch.
