Have just acquired an 8'6" WM zodiac and want to carry on my 97 270DA with a Swimplatform.com add on. How best to transport it? How best on a LOW budget?

Thanks for checking this out,

MM

You can probably get a stellar deal on a used Hurley Davit from rodrigoroa!!! :)

I have a new set of weaver davits in the box if you're interested, I'll make you a good deal. Pm or send me a text if you're interested.

Here is a shot of my "0" dollar solution on my 290:

+1 for the weaver davits. I carry a 8 foot dinghy on the swimplatform of my 260DA. Takes less than a minute to lower it down and have it in the water and ready to go. I have a short line attached to the side of the dinghy furthest away from the boat. Clip the dingy into the davits, pull up on the line so the dinghy now rests against the transom locker and tie off the line.
I would also reccomend the quick attach system for the davits, gets them out of the way when the dinghy is not on the platform.

MM - I realize your swim platform is different than mine, but I used the weavers on the bottom and made a flat bar to connect my grab rail with a grill mount I modified and existing oar clamp. Mine is a merc 240 which is also smaller than the 270 you have, but i wanted to give you some ideas. I have used this set up for several years and it works great.

I think I tied mine to the rail along the top of the transom to keep it angled right.

I used a big carabiner and short loop of rope to keep the engine from flopping all over the place while underway (you can see this in my pic).

It was a bit of work to pull up on the platform (but not too bad) but it worked and I had no obstructions on my platform when the dinghy was launched.

I know this is an old thread but it's all that came up in my search. I have a 2000 260DA. This model has the swim step cover/hatch. I want to use weaver davits for an Avon inflatable with inflatable hp floor. I have everything that I need but placement of the davits on the swim step is tricky. Last year I had one of the davits mounted on the swim step cover and that didn't work very well since the thing tends to bounce up. The only options that I can think of to resolve this is to move the 1 davit inwards to the centerline or outwards. If inwards then the davits become very close together. There is a small area on the outer edge. It woul be helpful to here from anyone that has figured out a way to do this and what they used. The only other option might be to put latches on the cover so it doesn't flip up. Pictures would be great.

Meant to say hear, not here. Last picture shows where they are. A previous owner must have also mounted davits on the cover (note holes).

I don't see why you couldn't move the port side davit to the edge of the platform nearest the ladder cover and be good. That's still 3'+ of separation? I'd imagine you'll be fine.

Aside from bumping around that swim ladder cover is definitely not up to the task of holding a dinghy. Check your hinges, make sure nothing was damaged last year...

If you are going to use Weaver system, you should consider using a Weaver arm for the transom attachment to the Dingy rather than the tube mounted pad. That way you will have the one end very solidly mounted and the pad that is now in the middle of the dingy will carry much less weight and will not bounce around nearly as much. Here is my set up. You can see that my mount (installed by the P.O.) was very centered. The arm holds it very solid, including when I leave the outboard on.

Not sure of how much weight your swimplatform can handle but we loved the Seaweed Lift unit on our 37’ boat. It is highly customizable to give you space to still move around on the platform.

When we had a 260DA we had a 8’ dingy with a 4hp... I used to just pull it up on the swim platform and tie it down. I only did it in calm waters and fairly short runs
I have done it on the current boat too... but quite a bit bigger platform

An under 50 lb dinghy and under 40 lb. motor is the way I’m looking to go.
When I need a dinghy it will only to be to get from a anchorage, a couple of hundred feet, to a dock. No need to break my back.
