I bought a Riviera paddle board a year and a half ago and unwisely stored it uncovered on bow of boat. The sun ate up the finish. Quickly. Looks to be nothing more than standard polyurethane. But not sure. It's yellowed and bright areas are where it's completely gone. My thoughts are to strip and recoat with whatever the best clear stuff is. But I am looking for advice. Will chemically stripping damage the blue base color?

I dont have any experience in paddle boards, but would lean towards sanding before chemical stripping. I'd be afraid of softening the under layers with the stripper and it would eventually eat at your new finish.

An orbital or "da" to sand the flaking spots and wet sand the remaining should get you ready to topcoat. You might want to test paint an area with a polyurethane or epoxy based finish to see if it will lift color or existing finish.

Cool project, will be following.

I almost don't care what the bottom looks like. Wondering if rolling on a colorful bottom paint is a valid idea.

Well, I talked with the manufacturer and they said they spray on automotive paint for the color and then spray automotive clear coat over the paint. Just like a car would be done. Seems strange for automotive clear to yellow and peel from the sun and salt in just 18 months. Never seen that happen to a car.

I've seen car paint yellow....not in many years has it been used, but lacquer will yellow over time. They most likely used a crappy budget finish and this is your chance to shoe them how to do it right!
