I am considering making the move from the north shore of LI to the south shore and like what Moriches has to offer. I have heard that its tough going during low tides and you need to be really careful and this has me concerned. Anyone have any experiences to share about the area?

LetsRock - I've crossed Moriches once this summer. My understanding is the locals zip around that place all day and not worry about a thing. People who don't boat around there sweat when they pass through. You can be in 3 ft of water and see the seagulls standing 15 feet away from you. The sand moves often so the buoys are always moving.

I'm sure if you boat out of there its just one of those things you get used to.

Hey... look on the bright side... you are on the south shore. If you run aground its only sand :) Its a scary thought to run aground on the north shore :)

Thanks gnealon. I guess its always a 'getting used to the area' thing no matter where you go. Good point about the sand too. Do you have a slip in W Babylon? I havent decided on a definate location and would love to hear your thoughts on the W Babylon area.

How far is West Babylon from Lindenhurst ??

OK, after several days of seeing this title appear when I am browsing, I am at least 5 for 5 on this.

I keep reading it as "Any mooching boaters out there?" I am alone in this or am I a victim of subliminal advertising?

Well, since I run through Moriches I didn't see "mooching boaters" but during the season I see my fair share of those....they're usually sitting on my boat drinking my beer at my wifes invitation. I think they are also known as in-laws...:smt013

Moriches is a great area, but like every other (especially on the South Shore) you need to navigate with care. :smt009 It can be done, but Moriches Bay can be stressful at times. It's a bad combination of a narrow channel, fishing in the channel (both drifters and those at anchor):smt021, uncharted shoaling and very low water at low tide (1-2'):smt013. I think the Great South Bay is less stressful and is a short hop to Moriches and points east or west. Good luck.

Ah yes, the dreaded inlaw moochers. Since they don't make a potent enough spray that works against them, believe me, I've tried....

I found the best solution is to have two stashes of beer on board. Milwaukee's best within easy reach, and the better beers and liquors hidden in the boat.

Well, there is one spray that repels them but it usually only becomes available after a six pack and hot dogs with saurkraut.....:smt043

Unfortunately the hiding stuff doesn't work. They, like me, are Irish and can sniff out the good stuff blind and in the dark....:smt101

If you’re looking at the W. Babylon area you will be a good distance from Moriches. WB is a good spot to leave from because you have the Inlet nearby for access to the Atlantic and the Fire Island Towns start almost do-south form WB.
WB is not too far from Lindenhurst, you can get there very quickly
Enjoy the South Shore—much more to do down here

West Babylon borders Lindenhurst to the east.
