Patience, Patience, and more Patience.
And not just regular patience, but patience with a very soft touch.

The soft touch is very important because if you start to cross thread those
tiny threads you are the fast track to what could be termed an irreversible error.

If you haven't tried this, it might help:
The only trick I'm aware of is that if you press the switch hard against the back of the dash, you
MIGHT gain enough thread to turn the nut CCW until you feel it drop a little (right where the thread starts) and then go clockwise very easy, while still keeping pressure on from the back.

The other thing to bear in mind is DO NOT look much at the lever protruding through that nut, as it is guaranteed to NOT reflect centered OR square where the threads you are after are concerned.

Overlooking this tidbit of info, it's very easy to try and spatially use that as a reference point.
Doing so will only compound and complicate your efforts.

Gently start them backwards with light pressure until you feel the thread drop in and “seat”

On the backside of the switch, there should be another nut to adjust for various panel thicknesses. You can back off that nut a turn or two, if needed.

All good advice above. I have also found many times that you must hold the lever in the center (between off and on) to be able to get the threads to line up correctly. Otherwise, it can push the ring just enough to prevent it from aligning. Let us know if/how you get it.
