Looking at buying an 86 And would like to hear from others who own this boat, for advice and opinions.

Thanks

CN, Do a search on 268 threads. I think they have been discussed before? JC

It's a great boat and I would opt for the version with the small twins if I could find it. I don't know if they made this boat with a 350 or not. If so, it would be a real struggle and you'd be wishing you had the 454 Magnum! If you get the 454 be careful with the Alpha outdrive. It's a great drive, but later was rated to handle up to 300 hp and the 454 can put out 330 in that era. I have the 454/Alpha and its fine, but my boat is lighter and slightly under propped to relieve the strain in the drive unit. There were some complaints in that era that the drive couldn't handle the stress, so go easy on it and it will provide years of great service.

Aside from that, I think you will like the design of the boat and the classic lines from those years. They built a lot of them and many are still in service today. That's a tribute to a great boat. The deep V hull can handle pretty rough water and the V makes it a little tougher to plane, but everything is a compromise!

Keep us posted and if you have any questions, we'll definitely give you more answers than you want here!! :)

I got one last summer. She has twins GREAT power 45GPS , I also would stay away from the single small block , i know i wouldnt like it . I tow it with a 1/2 ton pu, and that is not good. I think there great boats but i just like them older sea rays . Good luck.

We have an '86 270 sundancer w/twin 170 alpha I I/O's. It
is one heck of a boat. A buddy has the 86 268 DA with the
350 single I/o he can get up and go and it's a great boat. In
Fact if you read soundings magazine from this summer they
had an article on people searching around for 80's models
Sea Rays because they are as well built as you can get. One
couple in the article, bought an '87 for 27,500 so if you keep
the boat bristol you will always get your money back.

I have an older 260. I got rid of the anemic small block/alpha combo. They perform well with twin 4.3's, but I'd go for a 454 with a Bravo (although they are harder to find.
