Another unemployed Captain

The boat's captain in probably guilty of inadequate communication with the bridge tender, but the tender should be fired (sued or hung) for failing to look out the window of his house...........he lowered the bridge on the passing boat.

I actually missed the fact the bridge was comming down when I saw the video the first time.

I also noticed once the boat hits he starts to raise the bridge again. :smt021

Very Interesting :smt013 Wonder who's fault it was?? Captain or Tender? Do you know were/when it happened?

That happened in Canada. Boat was a total loss. Boating company forced onto bankrupcy.Canal closed to all traffic until boat was moved and bridge found to be sound. Bridge tender was found to be high on weed (I think) More info at boatered.

Ship, bridge collide on Welland Canal
Sunday, August 12, 2001

A major Canadian shipping route is shut down Sunday after an accident involving a Great Lakes freighter.

The Welland Canal in southern Ontario is blocked by a disabled ship that collided with a lift bridge late Saturday night.

The freighter caught fire when part of the bridge it was travelling through was lowered too soon.

The accident took place near Allanburg, Ontario.

The collision ripped the smoke stack off of The Windoc, while 17 crew jumped into the water.

There were no serious injuries, although two people were reportedly treated for minor problems.

The ship was seriously damaged

Firefighters say the ship is seriously damaged, and it will take at least two days to get the fire completely out.

"We can only hit it with our aerials. It's just a very difficult situation," explained Fire Captain Larry Bering.

It's also difficult for the port of Thunder Bay, Ontario, which has been effectively shut down because of the accident.

Part of the bridge was lowered too soon

The Transportation and Safety Board is on the scene and are interviewing crew members.

They're expected to focus on why the bridge was brought down too early.

Some roads in the area are closed, as well as a portion of the St. Lawrence Seaway between Lakes Ontario and Erie.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB)

"The approaching Windoc was visible from the control room at the time the bridge operator started lowering the bridge.

It is likely that the operator's performance was impaired at the time of the occurrence
