Another tipping question

Was that too much to pay? And if so, what should it cost? It seems like Marine Max did a good job but if th price is out of line, I won't return there. What do you think?

My intial reation was panic, because your single engine boat was $1895 and my double engine boat is going in next month. It seems you had a little more than the basic 100 hour check.

I deal with hourly service people all the time, there's always two questions to ask. First, is the hourly rate fair compared to other similair shops in the area. A few phone calls can get that answer.

Second, are the number of hours correct. Most shops won't cheat you, they won't bill you for hours they didn't work. But the skill level varies from shop to shop. A good shop gets more work done in an hour with less problems. Finding a good shop is the holy grail.

just some thoughts. ever notice that at dunkin donuts that tip coffee mug and the looks from the staff as they hand you your change? they dont want to give it back, they watch you to see if you put it in the cup, I had a presumptious counter clerk actually throw my change into the tip cup instead of in my hand. They are more woried about the tip rather than delivering the service. i bet the most I've tipped there is at the most the coins being return to me in change. Have you ever recieved a free cup of coffee? or a free upsize when a mistake has been made? how about being aked to wait while a fresh pot was being brewed, YES for me at Starbucks, their first priority is the product and service, with a smile and in English. And the tips I leave there are green not silver, because they earn it not because they expect it. :smt101

I only tip if one or both conditions are met. 1) they save me money 2) they save me time. If they go out of their way to do either or both, then I give a tip. Also when I tip, I do it big. I want them to remember me, and I qualify it like, "I really appreciate you saving me X amount of dollars. And if you help me out the same next time, you can expect the same". I find they go out of their way to save me as much as they can. Heck I had one guy give me his car for two days because I didn't have any way to get around.

I also ask "the owner" if there is a cash discount. I've saved a ton of money by paying in cash over credit cards. The Owner knows how much it costs him to take a credit card as well as other benifits of accepting cash, and except for miles, it really doesn't cost me anything.
