Another great weekend on the lake !!!

Great Pictures  Link works good this time too

alex, as a stickler for useless trivia and being that i never heard of smith mountain lake, , i got to wondering how big the lake actually is. 20000 acres, 40 miles long, 500 miles of coastline. and they filmed "What About Bob" there. "I"M SAILING!!!!!!!!!"

nice pics. how long is your season there? year round?

here's my beautiful scenic picture from what i did with my boat this weekend. such is life in the northeast

Hey Ron ... I know ... we lived in Iowa for 14 years before we came down to NC ... yes we pretty much boat year round on SML. You can easily boat from March/April through October/November depending on the day early and late in the season. The summers are HOT here and the lake water hits 80F from June through August. This weekend the water was still 64F, so I let my legs dangle but didn't go in.

November thru March are slow and we do get cold in Dec thru Feb. But I also have been out on new year's day at 74F. Usually from Dec. throgh Feb. lows are in the low to mid 20s and highs are in the high 20s to high 30s. The coldest night I have ever measured was 8F, but that was an exception. Whe we had our 24 footer in a hoist the bilge never got colder than 22F all winter.

I winterize my water and head system in early December and put the bilge heater in. Our marina shuts the water off and drains the pipes after thanksgiving anyway, but they leave a couple of hydrants functional so if you want to wash or fill your boat on a nice day, you can.

About 25% of the cruisers in our marina baot all year round, so do we. The lake has a great Chrismas parade ... about 20 to40 boats decked out to the max with lights going around the lake. The are 13 marina on the lake so there's boats out there small and large all year round.

SML is great because it has hundreds of coves, many in the state park area that will never be built on or developed and are totally secluded like the one in the pictures (Searay Cove ... guess why).

"Last Dance" in the pictures is a 1995 500DA ... one like that will be my next boat!!
