I've got the XMD1 Head unit with the XM665 Changer. when playing the stereo at moderate levels it runs fine, at times I can watch the lights on the front of the unit get dimmer until the stereo system powers off. Any ideas?? I am hooked to my shore power when this occurs. Do I have a stereo problem, AC converter problem or what? It seems that the voltage is dropping? If I need a new stereo so be it, is there any head units that will work my current Changer or do I need to bring this up for a vote in the finance comittee (where my wife has one full vote, mine counts for less thatn one half and she also has full veto power) to replace both?

Meter the supply voltage at the radio between the head unit's power and ground connection. Check the meter when the problem occurs. If the voltage is OK, you probably have a problem with the head unit. If the voltages are off, check them at the breaker panel. If the breaker panel voltages are off, do a voltage drop test from the panel to the batteries on both B+ and ground. Otherwise do a voltage drop test from the breaker to the head unit and from the head unit's ground wire to the battery.

Best regards,

Thanks, I'll start there. In a related problem (perhaps) I found a straightened paper clip in the stereo cabinet  only to read in the manual that if the microprocessor needs to be reset that a small rod should be inserted to do so.. well I am finding that I lose the function of the power/function button almost daily independent of the loss of power and it needs to be reset.

Dan,
can't help you with the electrical problem but I do know that all the clarions up to the CDM4 have the same connector plug. If you bought one, you would be able to easily swith the head unit out. As for the CD exchanger it won't work with the newer clarion radios but you would be able to hook a mp3 player up to the unit through the auxillary rca jacks.
