another boat explosion

On a related note, when I had my first boat, I had a slip neighbour one year whose boat had an obvious fuel leak. His boat stunk like gas all the time. One time it was really bad. So i wrote a long note to him pleading that he fix his boat and NOT try to start or run it with that kind of leak. I tried to be nice. I ran into him one day a month later and he gave me attitude about the note. quite the a-hole. I reported it to the marina and he was gone shortly after.
A few years ago we had a sailboat leaking diesel fuel in our marina. He'd be there late working on his boat and the fuel seemed to always show up around dark. He kept saying it wasn't him, but it was obvious. One morning I woke up to find fuel oil on my swim platform and splashed on the side of my boat. I think he had a leak into his bilge and would pump it out when it was dark.

I called the local CG which was only a couple miles away. A few hours later a CG investigation crew showed up from Duluth, MN over 200 miles away. By then the spill had pretty much disappeared although by nose you could still pinpoint it to the sailboat. I don't know what all they said to him but shortly after he was putting in a new fuel tank and the mess never happened again.....he still claims it wasn't him.

^^^It's called plausible deniability. Used all the time by aholes!

I think the concern with running the blowers while fueling is you can actually suck fumes into the bilge.

I think it's pretty easy to be safe. Make sure all engine room components are ignition protected (i.e. No automotive parts). Fill up. Start blowers. Open hatch and sniff. If all clear, Start the engines.
