    Hi fellow SR owners,

We've recently purchased our 2007 Sundancer 355 (AKA Sundancer 320 in the US) and are looking forward to the upcoming summer - just getting some mechanical issues tended to.

I'm sure I'll be drawing upon the knowledge of this group as I embark on my steep learning curve so prepare yourselves for a barrage of dumb questions.

    Cheers,

    Rob & Kerstin

    Thankyou gents.

Unfortunately my enthusiasm has taken a bit of a hit since my last post - it seems the port engine has ingested water at some point.
We've owned the boat for 2 weeks and have yet to use it other than moving it to our mooring, so I elected to have a full service and get a few items replaced that I knew where required. (and had negotiated for)

So, new water pumps, alternators, fuel cooler units and spark plugs were fitted - sort of.
One of the plugs in the port engine was seized and broke off.

After removing the manifold the mechanic finally got it out, but a compression check showed more of a problem.
Sooo . . . the engine now looks like this:

Ask me if I'm having fun yet . . .

Firstly welcome from another local aussie........secondly commiserations.

I've got to ask, did you have the motor compression tested and/or leak down tested during a survey?

Ah, yes . . I was wondering how long it would take till some one picked up on that!

In my defence, I did query the inspector about doing a compression test but was assured that it wouldn't be necessary because the engines ran fine during the sea trial. Low compression on one cylinder didn't have a noticeable effect on performance - apparently.

My mechanic asked me the same question, but his response of "you should always get a compression test" was, (aside from being too late) somehow not all that comforting.

Did I mention in a previous post about a steep learning curve?

Nice photo at Elizabeth Quay, BTW.

Has your mechanic comp tested the other motor as well?

Good question - in all the angst about the port engine I forgot to chase this up.
He could tell the port engine had a problem by the way it turned over when cranking. Rather than a smooth and even RPM, the revs increased momentarily as the piston in the problem cylinder came up on compression.
The starboard engine didn't do that so he's confident that it's OK, but was going to test it anyway - will follow up with him.
