Another accident near Baltimore

Damn! I hope it all pans out for the Captain

Such a sad story. Our prayers for all the families. Hope the driver was not drinking.

The captain hit it hard.

Very sad news. Prayers for the families and their loss. Very tragic. Does look like a 340 from the video.

Been through there many times in daylight. I believe based on the article they hit not the bridge abutments, but hit the concrete piers/barriers that protect the abutments in the shipping channel from being struck if a barge or ship loses control. They are located away and parallel to the shipping channel. I usually don't run under the bridge in the channel as it's crowded and the harbor is a busy port. I usually go under on either side of the main channel. 29' of water is more then enough for my boat, no need to run the main span....

Night time and I don't know how they are lighted, if you change course due to traffic and lose situational awareness while on plane this certainly could happen no matter if you are in the channel or beside it as they sit away from the bridge...

Reprinting these words from another group I'm a member of.....

A person made this post today in regards to this accident.

"I posted about this yesterday but it just hit closer to home. Sadly one of my co-workers just came to me and told me it was her cousin Kim that was one of the women killed in this accident. Her husband was also aboard when the accident occurred. They have a 5 year old little girl that has no mother now. The other lady that was killed also had children. The whole thing is senseless. They were at a crab house in Dundalk drinking and decided to take a ride to Fells Point to a bar and continue drinking there. The people at my marina that heard them go by at around 2:30 am said they were going way faster than the 6 mph speed limit in the harbor throwing a nice wake. If you are going to drink do it responsibly, have a designated driver in the car or on the water! Wake up people!"

Don't remember the stat but in the mandatory boating course that NJ requires, the percentage of boating deaths that are alcohol-related is obscenely high - might have been in the 80% range. Yet people just can't resist.

Just wanted to dispute an earlier SR member regarding the location of the Key Bridge which is not a speed zone the last time I was up there. The 6 MPH speed limit starts maybe a mile or so up the Patapsco at Ft Mc Henry so it is not illegal to go faster under ideal safe conditions which is a judgement. Also as I recall these concrete structures are not lit at night. They should consider lighting these things which have been deadly repeatedly.

This boat was headed out of the harbor at the time which means heading away from the city lights into darkness. At night this direction looks like you are heading into a black hole. You have to be extremely careful to be safe this way.

Pat, I think he was referring to their speed in the Harbor when leaving Fells Point. Above Ft. McHenry

Last I heard on the news, it was a 370 Dancer.
Those dolphins are lit, Not sure if the one in question was out at the time of accident. Still you should know your boat, your surroundings, your electronics and your limits. And adjust speed accordingly or stay at the dock.
Our prayers to the families.

It's not a 370 DA, it is 37' long, which is true for a 340....totally different design on the 370 DA, but same dimensions as a 340. Aside from the blue hull, the boat involved is identical to mine.

It turns out my marina owner knows the boat and owner. It was to my understanding a 400. The owner picked up the two girls at a tiki bar on the downriver side of the bridge that evening. They left around 11 pm from the tiki bar and headed into Baltimore. The tiki bar and marina owner says he was "fine" to drive when he left the marina (CYA anyone?). Then of course the accident occurred at 3:30 am after being downtown. The girls were young, and one had two young kids. This is definitely a case where they should have slept on the boat and come home at first light.

CYA? Under statement! I am very sorry for all involved, but somewhere along the line the Captain IS responsible for the actions of the boat.

many of you tought me early in my learning of my 30', slow down at night...never go faster than you want to hit something. Everything gets lost at night. Whether it's lit at night or not, a Captain should know the area he or she is boating in and if they don't then slow down!

BTW, many of you have taught me that

Absolutely agreed, and driving home with a boat full of people at 3:30 am after partying all night is criminal, and I suspect that charges will be filed for a minimum of negligent homicide.

This accident has stupid and avoidable written all over it.

Pics from the Baltimore Sun. 340? 320?

That's a 320 or a 340, not a 400... It's a sad story, boats, drinking, darkness and immovable objects aren't a good mix...

Tell me about it. I will not drink anything with alcohol in it if I have to move the boat. Once the anchor's down or we're tied up, then it's bottoms up.

In an older version of wicked tuna on the outer banks of NC, two old salts with many years of boating both hit a bridge at 4 am, cold sober. Granted, there was wind and current involved. Drunk and inexperienced boaters don't have a chance. We see it all the time here in SoCal.

I am pretty sure its a 340DA. On a 320DA the fourth bow rail stanchion is at the forward edge of the forward starboard window. On the 340DA the 4th stanchion is in between the two windows (according to pictures I just looked at).

As I said multiple times, it is a 340. The soft top arch is a dead giveaway, as is the swim platform. Honestly, you guys don't think I would recognize another 340?

I agreed with you the first time you pointed it out... I think some just don't read the fine print. :smt021

Very sad situation, condolences to the families.

Trust by verify. Nothing wrong with that. I apologize for offending any absolute authorities out there.
